Tennessee has one of its biggest offensive pieces back in DeSean Bishop, and the Vols put the spotlight on him during a recent practice by mic’ing up the running back and sharing the footage ahead of the 2026 season.
Bishop, who emerged as a fan favorite and breakout star a year ago, worked through running back and returner drills while showing the leadership role he’s taken on inside the program. At one point, he delivered a message to a teammate that summed up the edge he brings every day: “can’t should never be in a man’s vocabulary.”
The return to practice comes after a huge first season as the starter. Bishop ran for 1,076 yards and 16 touchdowns on 182 carries last year, giving Tennessee a reliable playmaker who produced at a high level throughout the season.
His rise has been a long time coming. A local product from Karns High School, Bishop arrived at Tennessee as a walk-on before eventually earning a scholarship and growing into one of the team’s top offensive weapons.
Josh Heupel said this fall camp that Bishop’s path stood out from the start.
“You go back to that time frame, we were short on scholarships, but believed in the player, believed that we could help him grow as a person,” Heupel said about Bishop this fall camp. “You go back to his high school tape, great feet in the hole, great vision, great pace.
And he certainly demonstrated that when he first got here. A guy that got hurt in his first training camp in one of the scrimmages, had a lower body injury.
Handled that in a mature way, continued to grow on and off the field.
“And you look at him taking advantage of his opportunities last year, the consistency at which he played with, never settled into a ‘I did this last year, this is what’s going to happen for me this year.’ That guy works as hard as anybody inside of our building.
And that’s in the football, the scheme, fundamentals and technique, but it’s how he takes care of his body after he trains his body. He’s the consummate pro.”
