Expectations are sky-high for David Sanders Jr. as he gears up for spring camp. The second-year offensive tackle is making the switch to the left side of the line, and there’s a strong belief he could emerge as one of the top linemen in the nation.
In his first year, Sanders focused on bulking up, adjusting to the right tackle position, and mastering the playbook. Now, he’s diving deeper into the technical nuances of the game, which could elevate his performance to new heights.
Sanders isn’t just relying on his own experience; he’s also studying NFL stars to understand their success. Among his inspirations is Vols legend Trey Smith, currently making waves with the Kansas City Chiefs. Sanders shares a personal connection with Smith, which adds an extra layer to his learning process.
“I like to watch Trey Smith, obviously, because he’s from Tennessee,” Sanders shared. “I talk to him a lot.
He actually just texted me a couple of days ago to check on how spring ball is going. I also watch guys like Paris Johnson Jr. and Tyron Smith.
They remind me of my style-athletic, quick on their feet, not the heaviest, but super agile and skilled with their hands. I’m always looking to pick up things to enhance my game.”
Sanders’ relationship with Smith began during his recruitment. As a five-star prospect, Sanders committed to the Vols, and their contact increased, creating a support system for Sanders when needed. During the busy season, their communication might dip, but in the off-season, Smith checks in regularly.
“When he’s in season, maybe not as much,” Sanders explained. “But in the off-season, he talks to me a lot, just checking in.
I know I can call him anytime. He’s there as a mentor and a friend, helping me through my process and preparing for the season.
He’s a great guy.”
Sanders is expected to start at left tackle without any competition. Joining him as returning starters are Sam Pendleton, Wendell Moe Jr., and Jesse Perry. The main question is whether Perry will line up at tackle or guard, and if LSU transfer Ory Williams will be ready to take on the right tackle position.
