BYU Has Everything To Gain In A Rivalry Game That Just Got Bigger

Discover the high-stakes clashes in college football's Week 10 as teams battle for playoff dreams and championship glory.

Week 10 in college football doesn’t waste time. The schedule is loaded with games that can reshape the playoff picture, and six of them feature ranked teams on both sidelines. For contenders in the SEC, Big Ten, and Big 12, this is the kind of Saturday that can turn a promising season into a real path to the postseason - or knock a team right out of the conversation.

Start in the Big 12, where Utah and BYU are set for a Holy War with first place on the line. Utah sits atop the league after hammering Cincinnati, while BYU is tied with Texas Tech for second after getting past Arizona State.

The Cougars haven’t looked as sharp since beating Notre Dame, and the stakes are obvious: the winner gets a direct route to Arlington and then, potentially, the College Football Playoff. The Utes are still undefeated, and this is the kind of test that says plenty about whether that stays true.

The SEC brings its own elimination drama. In Death Valley, two-loss rivals square off in what amounts to a playoff knockout game.

Both teams have already taken two losses, and a third could be enough to end the conversation. The winner gets credit for one huge quality win and moves into the clearest position among the playoff hopefuls.

There’s even a slim path for a three-loss SEC team, but the loser here would still need to run the table from that point forward.

Out in the Big Ten, Oregon and Ohio State are suddenly staring at a game with massive consequences. Oregon is still in the mix for Indy after taking down ranked Northwestern, and the Ducks arrive with momentum.

Ohio State, meanwhile, comes in after a costly second loss at USC, a game shaped in part by some very squirrely quarterback play from Julian Sayin replacement Luke Fahey. Home field might help the Buckeyes.

It might not. Either way, this one could decide whether the preseason No.

1 Buckeyes keep their playoff hopes alive or whether preseason No. 2 Oregon takes control of the postseason picture.

Kentucky’s trip to Tennessee carries plenty of weight too, especially after Will Stein’s debut season has the Wildcats in first place in the SEC. Now comes the hard part: trying to pull off an upset on Rocky Top against a Tennessee team that badly needs the win after a surprise loss at South Carolina.

Kentucky still has Florida, Missouri, and Louisville waiting later, so there’s added pressure to cash in here. Tennessee, meanwhile, is leaning on tough defense and one of the better rushing attacks in college football.

Notre Dame also lands in the spotlight with a massive chance against No. 1 Miami.

An Irish win would give them arguably the best performance in college football this season and push them firmly into the playoff conversation. A loss could be devastating.

Notre Dame already fell by four points at ranked BYU, and the rest of the schedule doesn’t offer much comfort. If the Irish end up with two losses against the only real quality teams on the slate, the debate could go against them.

Then there’s Georgia and Ole Miss, a matchup that should have plenty of eyes on it after both teams played one-score games twice a year ago. Georgia backed up its standing as the SEC’s best overall team with a pounding of Florida, while Ole Miss turned in a strong showing against Auburn.

The Rebels already have two losses, to now unranked Florida and resurgent Texas, and need something impressive here to strengthen their case. They may find ways to slow Georgia’s passing game, which hasn’t been lighting it up lately.

Georgia, for its part, owns a win over Alabama but also has a loss to unranked Auburn, and another defeat would only muddy the SEC race even more.

Kentucky Just Gave Tennessee Fans Another Reason To Bring It Saturday

The Rock at the University of Tennessee did not stay blue for long after Kentucky fans left their mark with messages backing the Wildcats ahead of Saturdays football game. Tennessee quickly painted it back, but the brief takeover was enough to add another layer of edge to a rivalry that already had plenty of it, especially with Kentucky carrying a top-10 ranking into the matchup.

For Tennessee fans, it is the kind of pregame fuel that tends to travel well from campus to Neyland Stadium. The Volunteers are favored, but the backdrop now includes a little extra motivation and a reminder that this one is about more than just the standings. [Read more 🡒]

Kentucky Fans Just Turned Tennessees Campus Into Rivalry Fuel

A familiar piece of campus real estate became the latest flashpoint in the Tennessee-Kentucky rivalry when Kentucky fans painted The Rock blue with white lettering before the football game. The landmark on the University of Tennessee campus has long been a canvas for student expression, but this time it became a very public target in the lead-up to a matchup that already carries plenty of edge.

Tennessee fans quickly moved to remove the paint, and the scene at the site briefly turned tense before settling down. It was the kind of small, petty, very on-brand rivalry stunt that reminds everyone how much this series still means, with kickoff set for later in the day and both sides already treating the campus prank as part of the buildup. College GameDay Just Handed Kentucky Fans A Tennessee Debate

College GameDay spent the run-up to Week 10 doing what it always does best, turning a Saturday slate into a conversation piece, and Tennessee was right in the middle of it. Among the analysts and the guest picker weighing in, the Volunteers were one of the favored teams on the board, a nod that fits the way this matchup has been framed all week around defense, home-field edge and the kind of small details that tend to decide late-season games.

For Tennessee fans, the interesting part is not just the pick itself but the company it keeps. The panel leaned toward several heavyweights across the country, from Ohio State and Georgia to LSU, Utah and Notre Dame, while also pointing to a few spots where absences or venue could tilt the outcome one way or the other. Kentucky fans may not love hearing Tennessee singled out in that mix, but it does add another layer to an already familiar SEC debate heading into Saturday. [Read more 🡒]
