Bret Bielema Just Reopened A Tennessee Wound With Another SEC Shot

Bret Bielema's ongoing jabs at the SEC aim to spotlight Illinois football, but critics suggest his attempts might overshadow the team's actual performance.

Bret Bielema is back at it, and this time the Illinois coach is once again using a win over Tennessee as a chance to jab at the SEC.

After Illinois beat Nebraska in Week 10, Bielema made the kind of comment that instantly lit up the conversation around him. As Scott Richey reported on November 7, 2026, Bielema said: “We’re 6-3 and beat another 5-3 team.

If we were in the SEC we’d be a top 15 team. #Illini #B1G”

That line was enough to get people rolling their eyes, especially because Tennessee is sitting at 6-2, has a loss to then No. 1 Texas, and is ranked No. 16, just outside the Top 15. The Vols are also coming off a heartbreaking loss to Illinois in the 2025 Music City Bowl, which has only kept Bielema’s old bowl-game bragging rights in the spotlight.

But the bigger issue for Bielema is that Illinois’ own résumé doesn’t exactly support the chest-thumping. The Illini have three losses: a 31-27 defeat to Duke on Sept. 12, a 42-19 loss to Ohio State on Sept. 12, and a 24-17 loss to Purdue on Oct.

  1. That Purdue loss came in Champaign, and Purdue is now 3-5.

That’s not the kind of profile that screams Top 15, no matter what conference you’re in.

This isn’t even the first time Bielema has taken a shot at the SEC. People still remember his comments at Big Ten Media Days, when he said the SEC wants to “stay in 2005” forever. Now he’s back to poking the same bear, even after Illinois’ win over Matt Rhule’s team.

Meanwhile, Tennessee has bigger things on its mind. The Vols are chasing a College Football Playoff run, something that can’t be said for Illinois right now.

Tennessee is looking for its second Top 10 win of the season after beating Alabama, and No. 8 Kentucky is next at Neyland Stadium.

Illinois’ last Top 10 win, by comparison, came five years ago against a No. 7 Penn State team.

Bielema can keep hanging on to that Music City Bowl win if he wants. But every time he turns it into an SEC lecture, it only brings more attention to his own record - including his 29-34 run at Arkansas and his 11-29 mark in SEC play.

Tennessee Faces A Costly Problem At The Worst Time Against Kentucky

Tennessees penalty issues have been a running problem all season, and the timing could hardly be worse with Kentucky next on the schedule. The Volunteers have been flagged 61 times and sit near the bottom of FBS in penalty yards, a frustrating trend for a team that has often had the talent to control games but not always the discipline to finish them cleanly.

Kentucky brings a different kind of pressure, playing with one of the nations better penalty profiles and a turnover margin that has helped separate it from Tennessee this fall. Josh Heupel has already pointed to the Wildcats strong play and made it clear the Vols will need a cleaner performance to keep pace, which only raises the stakes for a team trying to avoid giving away yards and possessions in a game where every mistake could matter. Tennessee Brings Dark Mode Into A Kentucky Test That Could Get Lopsided

A night game in Knoxville already changes the feel of the week, and Tennessee is leaning into it with its Dark Mode black uniforms for Kentuckys visit. The Vols have made these prime-time home settings feel routine under Josh Heupel, and the matchup comes with another layer of familiarity: Tennessee has not lost to Kentucky during his tenure, a run that has helped turn this rivalry into one the Vols have controlled.

The numbers around the game point to why this one could tilt quickly if Tennessee starts fast. Third-down efficiency has been a separator for both teams, and the historical series has long favored the Vols, who have had the upper hand in recent meetings as well. With the lights on and the black uniforms out, Tennessee gets a chance to make another statement in a series that has increasingly belonged to the home side. [Read more 🡒]

Tennessee Gets Another Shot With Elite Edge Target

Tennessee is getting another chance to make a strong impression on one of the top junior college edge prospects in the country. Four-star defensive end Hayden Lowe is scheduled to be on campus for an official visit during the Kentucky game, adding another notable recruiting stop to a fall stretch that has already included an earlier Tennessee visit and scholarship offer.

Lowe originally signed with Miami before moving on to the junior college route, and his market has only grown since then. Alabama, California and Missouri have all extended offers as well, so the Volunteers will be trying to use the game-day atmosphere and the familiarity built earlier this season to stay in the mix with a highly sought-after pass rusher.
