Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire didn’t waste much time getting to the heart of the mess around college football’s eligibility chaos.
On Friday morning, during an appearance on the Shan & RJ Show on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas, McGuire was asked about the possibility of adding NFL talent. Instead of keeping it narrow, he used the moment to take aim at the confusion swirling around the NCAA and to point directly at Tennessee linebacker Arion Carter’s suspension.
“We’re always - there’s never going to be a time that, with the way we do things at Texas Tech, that we’re not going to try to make our roster better at any point,” McGuire said. “But, it’s so - even with a judge saying that they can do this, you don’t know if that’s going to happen.
Because there’s still rules to - like, you guys, man, you talking about craziness? Me and you, we could sit here, y’all can have me back, we go on this rant of what’s going on in college sports.
But think about the Tennessee kid that’s suspended for two games. And we’re talking about guys that have NFL agents, that are getting paid by NFL teams, are, ‘Okay, you can come back.’
But how long are they going to be suspended? Because there’s no difference.”
McGuire’s point was simple: if Carter can be punished after repaying the $427.48 pre-NFL Draft flight he received from an agent, then how does the NCAA draw a line for other players trying to return to college football under the court ruling that briefly opened the door?
That ruling, issued Wednesday by a Louisiana state court, would have allowed former college players from the 2022 recruiting class to return for a fifth year of eligibility. But it also came with a major catch for any player who had been at the NFL level: they would have to end their pro deals and repay any money they had received.
By Friday, that decision was reversed.
The timing mattered, because McGuire’s comments came just hours before the reversal. Still, his frustration lined up with the larger uncertainty hanging over the sport. The Tennessee situation, in particular, had already become a flashpoint.
At the start of fall camp, Tennessee coach Josh Heupel didn’t hide how he felt about the NCAA’s punishment.
“The ruling that came out from the NCAA, the two-game suspension, I truly believe is bullshit,” Heupel said. “You look at the landscape of college football.
The rules from NIL, everything. I think the ruling is completely outdated.
Disappointed for him and for us in the result of that ruling.”
Carter is set to serve a two-game suspension this season, with the penalty landing against Furman in Knoxville and Georgia Tech in Atlanta.
Tennessee can absorb it on the field - the Vols are deep at linebacker - but the situation still adds another layer to a sport already drowning in confusion.
