Alabama basketball pulled off a thrilling comeback to secure its eighth straight SEC victory, edging out Tennessee 71-69. This win snapped a five-game losing streak against the Volunteers and showcased Alabama's resilience.
The game looked bleak for Alabama at halftime, trailing 40-28, and Tennessee extended their lead to 55-42 in the second half. But the Crimson Tide showed grit, with sophomore point guard Labaron Philon stepping up in the clutch moments to secure the win.
A key factor in the comeback was Alabama's improved rebounding in the second half. Although Tennessee dominated the boards overall, 47-30, Alabama managed to become more competitive in the final 20 minutes. Head coach Nate Oats noted the importance of this shift, highlighting the team's ability to get crucial stops and outscore Tennessee 29-14 in the last seven minutes.
Oats also pointed out that Tennessee grabbed 16 offensive rebounds in the first half but only nine in the second. This improvement in defensive rebounding was pivotal in keeping the game within reach.
Next up, Alabama faces Georgia on Tuesday, looking to continue their winning streak.
