The offensive coordinator carousel is spinning fast this offseason, and one big name just came off the board. Mike McDaniel is headed to Los Angeles to join the Chargers as their new OC. That move takes a creative play-caller off the market-one who had reportedly drawn interest from multiple teams, including the Tennessee Titans.
While it’s unclear whether McDaniel was Robert Saleh’s top target for Tennessee’s vacant offensive coordinator role, he certainly seemed like a strong fit. But with McDaniel now locked in with the Chargers, the Titans are shifting their focus-and a new name is emerging as a frontrunner.
Brian Daboll drawing strong interest from Tennessee and Philly
According to Dianna Russini, both the Titans and the Eagles are making a strong push to land Brian Daboll as their offensive coordinator. And that makes sense. Daboll’s résumé speaks for itself.
Before his stint as head coach of the New York Giants, Daboll was the offensive coordinator in Buffalo, where he helped engineer one of the league’s most potent attacks. In his final two seasons with the Bills, the offense ranked in the top three league-wide-an impressive feat in a league where offensive consistency is hard to come by.
Now, Daboll is expected to interview for the Bills’ head coaching job following Sean McDermott’s departure. That means any team hoping to bring him in as a coordinator-Tennessee included-will have to wait until that process plays out.
If he lands the Buffalo job, obviously he’s off the board. But if not, the Titans and Eagles are clearly positioning themselves to pounce.
Why Daboll makes sense for the Titans
For the Titans, bringing in a coach like Daboll isn’t just about X’s and O’s-it’s about experience. He’s been in the pressure-cooker as a head coach.
He’s developed quarterbacks. He’s called plays in high-stakes games.
And he’s done it all in multiple systems across the league.
For Robert Saleh, that kind of experience could be invaluable. Hiring an OC who’s been in the head coach’s chair allows Saleh to focus more on the broader responsibilities of leading the team-especially on the defensive side of the ball, where he’s at his best. It’s a move that could bring balance and structure to a staff that’s looking to reset and reload after a transitional season.
As the coaching dominoes continue to fall, the Titans’ OC search remains one of the more intriguing storylines. Daboll checks a lot of boxes, but timing will be everything. If he doesn’t get the Bills’ top job, Tennessee could be in a prime position to land one of the league’s most respected offensive minds.
