The Tennessee Titans are 0-2, but the early shape of the AFC South has opened a door they can actually walk through.
Through two weeks, the division has stumbled badly. The AFC South is just 1-7 overall, and Jacksonville is the only team that has found a win so far.
The Jaguars opened with a dominant home victory over the Cleveland Browns, then fell on the road to the Denver Broncos to slip to 1-1. That leaves them sitting in first place by a narrow margin in a division that has yet to produce much of anything.
For Tennessee, that matters. The Titans were never being treated like division favorites, and that hasn’t changed. But the standings are loose enough right now that a strong Week 3 could change the conversation fast.
Robert Saleh can make real progress if his team builds on what it did well last week and takes care of business against the Giants. A win in New York would push Tennessee ahead of at least one AFC South rival, and maybe more depending on how the rest of the division shakes out.
That’s where the schedule starts working in Tennessee’s favor. The Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans meet in Week 3, and both teams are winless. Someone has to leave that game with a victory, which means one of them will finally get off the board while the other stays stuck with the Titans in the basement chase.
Jacksonville’s path doesn’t look especially comfortable either. The Jaguars return home next Sunday to face the 1-1 New England Patriots, which gives Tennessee a real opening if the standings break the right way.
The Giants game is not a free pass, especially on the road, but New York will be without its rising franchise QB, in Jaxson Dart. With Jameis Winston taking over under center for the Giants, Tennessee suddenly has a major chance to cash in.
If the Jaguars lose and the Titans handle their business, the picture gets even more interesting. Three weeks into the season, Tennessee could erase a rough start and jump right back into the division race.
Saleh’s group still has to show it can stack wins, but last week was at least a step in the right direction. For now, the Titans need to grab an early victory and keep themselves in the mix. After two weeks, the AFC South has given them plenty of room to do it.
