The Titans’ backfield is drifting toward a crossroads, and Tony Pollard’s recent surge has only made the decision more complicated. What once looked like a clean trade candidate now feels a lot murkier, especially with Pollard playing too well to be treated like a simple deadline chip.
That leaves Tennessee staring at a future problem that’s already taking shape. Pollard is 29 and in the final year of his contract, which makes a long-term return in Tennessee hard to picture. If he stays put through the deadline, the odds still don’t look great that the Titans would commit to a multi-year deal as he moves into his 30s.
The bigger issue is that the rest of the room hasn’t stepped up. Tyjae Spears, who was supposed to be the familiar partner in the backfield, has been a non-factor this season.
In six games, he has 18 carries for 66 yards, along with 15 catches for 75 yards, two fumbles, and no touchdowns. He’s also been missing practices, most recently because of a knee issue, and he has largely slipped out of the rotation even when active.
That’s why the smart move for Tennessee may not be waiting around for Spears to rebound. It may be taking another swing at the position in next year’s draft.
That wouldn’t mean the Titans are giving up on Nick Singleton. The Penn State back was a fifth-round pick, and that kind of investment was never supposed to guarantee an immediate answer. But the current state of the roster makes it hard to count on him as the solution by himself.
The free-agent market doesn’t offer much help either. The names at the top are veteran backs well past the point where teams usually want to build around them, with Alvin Kamara at 31, Aaron Jones at 31, and Pollard among the headliners. Beyond that, the options mostly look like backups who are more likely to stay where they are than hit the market.
If Tennessee wants a real long-term answer, the draft looks like the better path. One name that fits the bill is Florida’s Jadan Baugh, who NFLDraftBuzz.com projects as a late first-round pick and the favored RB1 in a class full of playmakers. Through eight games this season, the junior has 801 yards on 152 carries and 13 touchdowns.
Baugh has also protected the football. He hasn’t fumbled once this season, and across three years at Florida, he has fumbled only once. At a big frame, he still moves with ease and keeps his balance through contact, which is why early Le’Veon Bell comparisons have started to surface.
If the Titans are going to keep Pollard around because he matters to Cam Ward’s development, the same logic should apply to finding a back who can grow with Ward for the long haul. Baugh would fit that idea cleanly, if he’s still on the board when Tennessee’s late first-round pick arrives via the Chicago Bears.
That’s where the plan gets interesting. If the Titans use their higher first-rounder on defense and land a Jeffery Simmons replacement, the later pick could be the chance to lock in a future centerpiece on the ground.
And if that means more competition for Singleton, so be it. He doesn’t need to be handed the job.
Michael Carter has already gotten midseason looks over the rookie, which says plenty about where things stand right now. A draft pick like Baugh would give Tennessee another young option, let Singleton develop, and leave one of Spears or Carter in place as the veteran presence.
For a team building around Ward, that’s the kind of move that makes sense. If the board breaks right, the Titans could walk away with a refreshed backfield and a clearer long-term plan.

Titans May Have Found A Nickelback Answer They Werent Expecting
Alontae Taylors week-to-week role has been one of the more interesting subplots for the Titans, especially after he was benched in Weeks 6 and 7 before getting thrown back into the mix at nickelback in Week 8. Marcus Harris injury opened the door, and Taylor answered with a busy afternoon in the slot, logging 41 snaps and making a couple of plays that stood out in a game where Tennessee needed help on the back end.
He forced a fumble and broke up a two-point conversion pass, the kind of impact the Titans were hoping to see when they turned to him there. Still, the performance was not spotless, as he also allowed six catches for 82 yards, which leaves Tennessee with a real decision to make during the bye week. Harris injury status will go a long way toward determining whether Taylors latest opportunity turns into something more permanent. [Read more 🡒]
Titans Fans Will Have Strong Opinions On This Front Office Snub
A front office shortcut is already stirring conversation around the Titans, after New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh confirmed he reached directly to owner Amy Adams Strunk to explore a possible trade. Rather than going through Tennessees general manager, Harbaugh said he made the call himself and made clear his team is open to hearing from anyone about trade possibilities.
For Tennessee, the detail is the kind that tends to get people talking because it touches on how business gets done behind the scenes. Harbaugh brushed off the criticism that followed, but the fact that he went over the usual chain of command is exactly the sort of move that can leave fans and league observers debating what it says about the process, the leverage and what might come next. Cam Ward Just Gave Titans Fans A Reason To Believe Again
Cam Wards latest outing gave Tennessee a much-needed glimpse of what the offense can look like when the rookie quarterback settles in and starts playing with confidence. Against the Cincinnati Bengals, Ward completed 65 percent of his passes, threw two touchdowns and topped 300 passing yards for the first time in his career, a meaningful step forward for a Titans attack that has been searching for traction.
Brian Baldinger singled out Wards fundamentals and the way he handled run-pass options and play-action concepts, both of which helped the offense look more organized and efficient. With the Titans now on their bye week, the next test comes in Week 10 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, and the challenge will be carrying this progress into a division game that could say a lot about how real this turnaround might be.
