The Titans have made no secret of what they’re trying to build around Cam Ward. They spent heavily on the quarterback, then went right after help for him by taking Carnell Tate with the No. 4 overall pick. The idea is simple enough: if Tate grows into a true No. 1 receiver, Tennessee could have a young quarterback-wide receiver pairing that anchors the offense for years.
That vision is still in the early stages.
Sunday’s preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks gave the Titans another look at the Ward-Tate connection, and it didn’t produce much. Ward played the first quarter, finished 8-of-12 for 69 yards, and took one sack.
His throws were mostly short, safe completions, and none of his eight catches went to Tate. He targeted Tate twice and missed both times.
That follows the preseason opener, when Ward went 0-for-3 throwing in Tate’s direction. Through two games, the connection sits at 0-for-5.
The two misses on Sunday weren’t alike. One looked like a communication issue and sailed nowhere near Tate over the middle. The other came on a deeper throw that Tate got a hand on but couldn’t haul in.
There’s no reason to overreact to that kind of early preseason sample. Ward has only one year in the NFL, and he spent it behind one of the league’s worst teams.
Tate is just getting his first taste of NFL action. This is exactly the stage where teams want reps, mistakes and a chance to sort out the rough edges before the games count.
For the Titans, though, the hope is obvious: the chemistry has to come soon. Their offense, and the team’s bigger picture, is riding on it.
