Jameis Winston changes the whole shape of Week 3 for the Tennessee Titans.
Jaxson Dart’s season-ending injury already moved the line, turning Tennessee from a bigger underdog into a 2.5-point road underdog, according to ESPN. But the quarterback the Titans now have to deal with brings a very different kind of threat.
Winston does not play timid football. He throws deep, he throws often, and he has built a career on living in that high-variance space.
That puts Tennessee’s secondary in the spotlight. If the Titans are going to walk out of Week 3 with a win, they’re going to need to keep the Giants from turning the game into a downfield shooting gallery.
Winston wasted no time showing who he is after Dart went down in the Giants’ Week 2 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Most backup quarterbacks try to calm everything down and work underneath. Winston went the other direction and started attacking vertically right away.
He attempted four passes of at least 20 yards against the Rams. None of them were completed, but the intent was obvious.
He kept hunting chunk plays anyway. For comparison, Cam Ward has thrown just one pass more than 20 yards downfield this season, and he threw 22 such passes over his entire rookie year.
That approach gives Tennessee a choice. A lot of defenses would back off, give their corners some cushion, and dare Winston to settle for shorter throws. Saleh is likely to lean that way too, since he’s already made his bend-don’t-break philosophy clear.
Even so, the Titans can’t assume the deep ball will just disappear. Their coverage has already been exposed this season, with Tennessee allowing five completions of 20 yards or more. Against a quarterback like Winston, that’s the kind of weakness that gets tested immediately.
Alontae Taylor, Marcus Harris, and Cor’Dale Flott will have to deal with Malik Nabers, Malachi Fields, and Darnell Mooney. Harris and Taylor have had a rough start, allowing 13 receptions on 15 passes thrown in their direction. Flott adds another layer of uncertainty after missing Week 2 with a quad injury and now trying to get back on track in Week 3.
The message for Tennessee is simple: one lapse can turn into a big play fast. Winston is not the type to pass up a chance downfield, and the Titans’ secondary will have to stay locked in for all four quarters if they want to keep this game under control.
