Titans Rookie Is Making Tennessees New O-Line Battle Very Real

Rookie Fernando Carmona is making waves in the Titans' preseason as he eyes a starting guard spot amidst a backdrop of veteran competition.

A rookie who arrived in Tennessee on the final day of the draft is making a real push to be part of the Titans’ opening-day offensive line.

Fernando Carmona, a fifth-round pick, opened at right guard in the team’s first preseason game last week and is set to get another look there this week. That’s notable for a club that brought in multiple veteran offensive linemen this offseason, but Carmona has clearly worked his way into the conversation for one of the five starting spots.

“He put his foot in the door, and he’s doing everything he can to throw his shoulder through,” head coach Robert Saleh said, via Teresa M. Walker of the Associated Press.

Carmona’s path to this point has been a steady transition. He started at right guard in the preseason after playing left tackle at San Jose State and Arkansas, then shifting inside to guard in his final year with the Razorbacks. This summer, he’s been leaning on the daily challenge of going against defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons, and he said that matchup has been a big part of his growth.

“Being a rookie, there’s a lot of things I need to grow on, and he sees a lot of those flaws in me,” Carmona said. “And it’s just awesome having that veteran leader being able to tell you what he sees and how it can improve my game.”

The Titans are hoping Saleh’s arrival helps steer the franchise toward a better stretch of football than it has seen in recent years, and Carmona may end up being one of the players who helps shape that turnaround.

Titans Injury Wave Puts Early Pressure On Their Young Offense

The Titans are already dealing with an early-season squeeze on their young offense, and the injury report has only made the margin for error thinner. Tennessee has lost Jaren Kanak and Jaylen Harrell for the season, while backup quarterback Mitchell Trubisky and first-round pick Carnell Tate both showed up on the injury report before being expected to come through fine.

With Tony Pollard working back from a sore foot, the running back room had enough uncertainty that Tennessee moved to add DErnest Johnson for depth. The hope is that the current wave of injuries stops short of becoming a longer-term problem, but for a team trying to settle in around inexperienced playmakers, every missed practice has felt like another test of just how quickly this offense can steady itself. Rams Defense Suddenly Has A Chance To Be The NFLs Best

The Titans were part of the same offseason conversation as a handful of other defenses that could take a real step forward in 2026-27, thanks to coaching changes, draft capital and a busy run of personnel additions. For Tennessee, the appeal was straightforward: more speed off the edge, more disruption up front and a clearer sense that the defense could look far different by the time the season arrives.

Robert Salehs arrival has already changed the tone around the unit, and the Titans did not stop with a single fix in one area. They added another premium pass-rush piece with their second first-round pick, the kind of move that can reshape a front if the player hits as expected. The bigger question now is how quickly all those changes come together, and whether Tennessee can turn a promising collection of moves into something more than just offseason optimism. [Read more 🡒]
