Fernando Carmona’s rookie season has hit its first real snag, and the Tennessee Titans are now facing a stretch without one of the biggest surprises on their offensive line.
Carmona was carted off in the first quarter of Sunday’s game against the New York Giants with an ankle injury, and Jordan Schultz reported that the starting right guard suffered an ankle sprain and “will miss a few weeks.” The news comes after backup Jackson Slater finished out the game, even though head coach Robert Saleh said Slater was dealing with a “pretty significant” foot injury of his own.
For Tennessee, the timing could hardly be worse. Carmona had started all three games this season and quickly established himself as a steady presence after entering the summer expected to be a reserve. The fifth-round rookie out of Arkansas pushed his way into the starting lineup during camp, then locked down the job with his preseason play.
Through three weeks, PFF has Carmona in the middle of the pack among eligible guards overall, but his pass-blocking grade is much more impressive: 23rd of 68 players league-wide. For a rookie who wasn’t handed the job, that’s strong work.
The Titans’ offensive line has been one of the team’s early bright spots, and Carmona has been a big part of that. The unit allowed no sacks in the Week 3 loss to the Giants and had given up only five sacks across Weeks 1 and 2. Zach Lyons also reported that Tennessee’s line ranked second in the NFL in pass-blocking efficiency heading into today.
Now the question is who fills the gap. Atonio Mafi, 25, looks like the most likely option if the Titans need a replacement while Carmona and Slater are sidelined, though that’s only a best guess based on the current depth chart on Carmen Bricillo’s line.
Carmona’s absence could matter a lot for Cam Ward, whose struggles would be even tougher to manage behind anything less than a strong offensive front. Ward was sacked 55 times as a rookie last season, and the concern here is obvious: if the right side of the line wobbles, he could be under even more pressure over the next few weeks.
For now, Tennessee is left hoping Mafi or another fill-in can keep the operation stable until Carmona is ready to return. Either way, the Titans have lost a reliable rookie at a time when they can least afford it.
