Robert Saleh came out of the Titans’ preseason opener with more questions than answers at off-ball linebacker.
Tennessee entered camp with Cedric Gray and Cody Barton penciled in as the top tandem in the middle of Saleh’s defense. That picture looked a lot less settled after the first preseason game, where third-year pro James Williams Sr. and rookie Anthony Hill Jr. kept making noise and forcing the issue.
Williams, in particular, kept his momentum rolling. He’s been one of the camp standouts, showing up around the ball and putting pressure on Barton’s grip on the starting job. That tension only grew in the Titans’ preseason win, where Williams was one of the few defenders who consistently flashed.
Barton had his chances to quiet the competition early in Santa Clara and didn’t finish the job. On the opening defensive series, he read a pass and got both hands on the ball, but couldn’t finish what would have been an interception. Not long after, he came free on a blitz with a shot at 49ers quarterback Kurtis Rourke, only to miss the sack as Rourke slipped away and kept the play alive.
It wasn’t a disastrous outing for Barton, but it was the kind of night that leaves the door cracked open. And Williams stepped right through it.
The third-year defender kept doing what he’s been doing all camp: running to the ball and making himself impossible to ignore. He got involved early when the Titans used three linebackers, then stayed active after the starters were done for the night. He jumped a screen pass in the flat for a clean tackle and little gain, then later delivered a hard hit after closing fast on a quick out route.
The former safety’s athleticism showed up all night, and he emerged as a bright spot in a shaky Titans defense. Williams finished with five tackles, which tied for the team lead.
Saleh and his staff still have time to sort through the linebacker rotation, but the pressure is real now. If Williams keeps trending up, he could start cutting into Barton’s snaps before the regular season begins. The competition in that room is only getting tighter, and Saleh’s decision is getting tougher by the day.
