The Titans opened cut-down day with a clear message about where their offensive line stands. Their first roster move, reported by Ian Rapoport, is the release of G Cordell Volson, the veteran lineman who had signed with Tennessee earlier this offseason and had been in line to compete at right guard.
That picture changed fast once Fernando Carmona started turning heads in camp.
Carmona, a fifth-round pick by the Titans this year, arrived with the look of a depth piece. Instead, he forced his way into a real starting conversation almost immediately.
What began as a competition with Volson became a shift in momentum that never really swung back. Volson was listed as the starter on the team’s unofficial depth chart earlier this month, but not long after that, Saleh said Carmona had "the inside track" to the top spot.
PFF’s preseason numbers help explain why Tennessee moved the way it did. Carmona owns the highest offensive grade among rookie offensive linemen this preseason at 90.5, with that mark coming on a minimum of 50 blocking snaps. He has blended into a group filled mostly with multi-year veterans and looked natural doing it.
Volson, meanwhile, didn’t help his case. The 28-year-old’s preseason struggles became harder to ignore as he was compared directly with Carmona throughout camp. His release not only signals real trust in Carmona’s development, it also opens the door a bit wider for Pat Coogan, who is still hanging around the edge of the group.
There’s still more work to do as Tennessee sorts through a crowded offensive line, but this first move says plenty. After a season in which Cam Ward was sacked 55 times, the league high, the Titans showing even a little confidence up front is notable. One domino is down, and more roster decisions figure to follow.
