The Tennessee Titans are out of the “getting their feet wet” stage of camp and into the part where every rep starts to matter a whole lot more.
With roster cuts just nine days away, the margin for error is shrinking fast, and today’s joint practice with the Seattle Seahawks carries a different kind of weight than the Titans’ earlier work against the San Francisco 49ers. What looked like early camp trend-spotting last week is now a fight for roles, jobs, and the chance to stay in the picture at all.
Three players in particular are worth tracking closely as Tennessee gets back on the field ahead of Sunday’s matchup in Nashville.
One of the biggest names to watch is Jackson Carmona, who has been one of the most consistent buzz points around the Titans all summer. Drafted out of Arkansas in the fifth round, the rookie right guard has steadily worked his way up the depth chart and now looks like the favorite to beat out Cordell Volson and Jackson Slater for the starting job.
That makes this week especially important for Carmona. He’s already in position to have a role this season, but another strong showing in live action would go a long way toward locking him into the first-drive mix next month. It’s been a surprising rise for a rookie, but one Tennessee will happily take given the state of its offensive line entering the offseason.
At the other end of the spectrum is Isaiah Flott, a veteran corner Tennessee paid to stabilize the secondary this year. Instead, last week’s joint practice and preseason opener brought a rough stretch, capped by a game in which he was beaten by Niners rookie receiver De’Zhaun Stribling. His line from that outing - 74 yards allowed on six completions on six targets - left little room for spin.
The whole secondary needs a cleaner week, but Flott is the one under the brightest spotlight. Starting with Friday’s joint practice, he’s the defender who needs to turn things around first.
Then there’s Will Levis, who can’t be ignored here even with the focus around camp shifting elsewhere. With Trubisky apparently healthy and sitting in the QB2 spot behind Cam Ward, Levis seems to be on the outside looking in at Tennessee’s quarterback room.
At this stage, the only thing that would seem to give him a real shot is a huge finish to the preseason. He may be playing more for his next opportunity than his current one, but no one on the roster has more riding on this week than Levis. It’s a sharp fall from where he was just two seasons ago, and it leaves him in a true all-or-nothing spot as the Titans face Seattle.
