The Tennessee Titans keep trudging through a rough start, and after Sunday’s 12-7 loss to the New York Giants, the stock report has the same familiar split: a few players trending up, a couple sliding back.
The good news starts with Wan'Dale Robinson and Carnell Tate, who finally looked like a pair capable of steering the offense. The veteran and the rookie finished with 13 catches for 115 yards, and Robinson added a fourth-quarter touchdown. Tate was close to getting in on the scoring, too, but Cam Ward missed him in the end zone.
That kind of production matters because both players were brought in as major offseason pieces, one on a sizable contract and the other with a high draft pick. After this showing, there’s at least a stronger case that Robinson and Tate can be two reliable building blocks for Tennessee, no matter how the rest of the offense shifts around them.
Ward, meanwhile, lands on the wrong side of the ledger. His interception late in the game only reinforced the growing frustration around his play, and his line against New York - 23 completions on 36 attempts for 181 yards, one touchdown and one pick - didn’t help his case.
The bigger issue was the way the game looked in real time: the body language, the missed opportunities, the trouble locating open receivers and then connecting when he did. With Robinson and Tate producing around him, Ward’s inability to maximize the pieces he has is becoming harder to ignore.
Up front, JC Latham continues to make a strong case for himself. After a shaky sophomore season, the third-year tackle has settled in as a major strength for Tennessee.
Heading into Week 3, PFF had him with the highest island rate in the NFL and the fifth-best success rate in those one-on-one situations, and he backed that up against the Giants. He kept Ward protected throughout the day and helped the Titans get through a third straight game without allowing a sack.
At this point, the noise around Latham’s role has gone quiet.
The down side of the special teams story belongs to Chimere Dike. He put the ball on the ground for the second time on a kickoff in three games, then had multiple other shaky moments on returns without generating much of anything.
His day on offense didn’t balance that out either, since he finished with one catch for three yards. If Tennessee is going to keep leaning on him in that phase, Dike has to be cleaner with the football and sharper with his decisions.
Until then, he’s going to keep showing up here for the wrong reasons.
