The Titans’ swing tackle spot has turned into one of the quiet pressure points of training camp, and it still doesn’t look settled with roster cuts looming this weekend.
Right now, sophomore undrafted free agent Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson appears to be the front-runner. He has handled the preseason well enough to put himself in position for a meaningful role, while the veteran insurance plan has gone sideways. Tennessee signed Austin Deculus in free agency, but he has struggled in camp and through the preseason, and he may not survive Mike Borgonzi’s 53-man roster trim.
If Deculus is cut, Crenshaw-Dickson would be the only swing tackle behind starters Dan Moore Jr. and JC Latham. That’s a lot to ask of a player who didn’t log a single meaningful snap for the Titans as a rookie. Still, the former Florida Gators standout has done enough in the preseason to earn this look, and the team may simply not have a better option.
That’s the real issue here. Oli Udoh filled the swing tackle role well for Tennessee last season before leaving for the Arizona Cardinals in free agency, and the Titans seem to have taken a step backward at a spot that can become critical in a hurry. The margin for error is thin, because if either Moore or Latham misses time, the offense could be in serious trouble.
Borgonzi may still try to improve the position by sorting through players who get cut around the league. Quality tackles are not exactly waiting on the waiver wire, but Tennessee’s need is obvious enough that an upgrade could surface.
There could also be trade possibilities, including a late-round pick swap, as the roster cut period gets underway. Borgonzi will need to keep his eyes open.
