Tennessee Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi used his first media session after roster cuts to lay out a few of the clearest takeaways from where the team stands now.
Most notably, Borgonzi sounded confident about Robert Saleh’s first Titans group. He said Tennessee “has the guys here to compete,” and added that he expects the team to get better as the season develops. That kind of optimism may come easy in late August, but Borgonzi is speaking from a place of experience after sitting through two straight three-win seasons under Brian Callahan and helping steer the rebuild since then.
The quarterback picture also came into focus. Borgonzi made a point of praising Will Levis, who ended up as the only signal caller the Titans fully moved on from, with Hendon Hooker landing on the practice squad.
Borgonzi said Levis carried himself like a pro and that he’ll be rooting for him going forward. Levis’ path had been trending this way since the spring, when Tennessee signed veteran QB Mitch Trubisky ahead of him.
Even so, Levis leaves Nashville with his stock in a better place than it might have been after camp. He didn’t do enough to win back the QB2 job, but Borgonzi’s comments made clear the Titans still respected how he handled the situation.
Hooker, meanwhile, earned his own shoutout. Borgonzi said Hooker has “picked up the entire offense,” and credited him for making the most of his chances as the reason Tennessee kept him around.
In the preseason finale against the Chicago Bears, Hooker rushed twice for 29 yards and completed five of eight passes for 37 yards. That kind of steady, no-drama work is exactly what the Titans wanted from him on the practice squad.
And if circumstances ever force him into action, Hooker has at least shown he can keep things moving.
Borgonzi also highlighted rookie lineman Fernando Carmona, whose quick rise has become one of the more encouraging developments of the offseason. Carmona got his chance with Tennessee’s first team and, according to Borgonzi, did a nice job with it. Veteran Cordell Volson had opened August as the unofficial starter at right guard, but he has since been cut, leaving Carmona in place.
The numbers back up the climb. Per PFF, Carmona posted the highest grade among rookie offensive linemen this preseason at 90.5, minimum 50 blocking snaps. That kind of performance helped him win the job, and it should give Cam Ward a better chance at cleaner pass protection than the Titans had a year ago.

The move does not appear to close the door on his Tennessee future, since he is still expected to be a candidate to return on the practice squad, but it does underline how fluid the Titans final roster picture remains. Titans Cut Day Left One Roster Move Fans Will Debate Most
The Titans have mostly wrapped up the churn that always follows cut-down day, and the shape of the offseason roster is starting to come into focus. Keeping Jeffery Simmons on the defensive front was never really in doubt, but the rest of the moves offered a clearer picture of what Tennessee values right now: depth in the secondary, some added flexibility on the edge, and a willingness to keep reworking the back end of the roster until it feels right.
What will linger longest for fans, though, is the decision to move on from Kyle Philips, a player whose fit and role had already been debated for months.
