The Tennessee Titans are giving Chris Johnson his flowers at a moment that carries far more weight than football.
On Friday, the team announced that Johnson will be formally inducted into the Titans Ring of Honor on September 13, when Tennessee opens its season against the New York Jets. The timing comes shortly after Johnson revealed that he has been diagnosed with ALS and is now pushing to raise awareness for the disease.
“Chris Johnson holds a special place in the hearts of our organization and our fans,” Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk said in statement today. “His stats speak for themselves, and he will forever remain a leader in our record books, but the man behind the yardage deserves just as much celebration. We look forward to welcoming him home on Sept. 13 and officially inducting him into the Titans Ring of Honor.”
Johnson’s career in Tennessee was the kind that left permanent marks. A first-round pick in the 2008 NFL Draft out of East Carolina, he first turned heads with a 4.24-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine. Then he backed up the speed with production, rushing for more than 1,200 yards as a rookie and winning Rookie of the Year while helping the Titans finish with the AFC’s best record that season.
The peak came in 2009, when Johnson ran for 2,006 yards and became just the sixth player in history to top 2,000 rushing yards in a season at the time. He also finished with 2,509 yards from scrimmage, an NFL record that still stands.
By the time he left Tennessee in 2014, Johnson ranked third in franchise rushing history. He now sits fourth behind Eddie George, Derrick Henry and Earl Campbell. From 2008 to 2013, he piled up franchise records and established himself as one of the league’s best backs.
Now, with his health battle front and center, the Titans are making sure his place in team history is celebrated the right way.

With training camp set to open soon, the Titans roster looks mostly settled, but there is still room for Mike Borgonzi to keep scanning the veteran market. Rookies report July 23, veterans follow July 28, and the front office has a few spots where experience could still matter if the right fit shakes loose.
The most obvious areas are in the secondary and along the offensive line, where Tennessee could use another layer of competition and insurance.
