The Tennessee Titans have barely had time to shake off their Week 1 loss to the New York Jets, and now they’re staring at another tough one with the Philadelphia Eagles coming to Nashville just seven days later.
That opener still hangs over everything. Tennessee was blown out 23-10, and for a team that spent the offseason rebuilding, it was not exactly the kind of start that builds instant confidence.
Still, it would be a mistake to bury this first-year Titans group after one game. A win over the Eagles would flip plenty of opinions in a hurry.
If Tennessee is going to pull it off, it won’t be by trying to outmuscle Philadelphia. A realistic Titans win would have to come in the margins. Limiting explosive plays, staying ahead on the stat sheet, and forcing the Eagles into a more complicated offensive day are the cleanest paths.
That means the little things matter. Tennessee cannot afford turnovers on kickoffs again, and it needs to avoid the second-half fade that hurt so badly last week. It also has to keep Philadelphia from settling into a rhythm on the ground.
That’s the danger. The Jets once ran the ball 10 straight times on one drive in Week 1 and still came away with a field goal. Letting a back like Saquon Barkley control the game in that same way would be a fast route to another loss.
A 20-17 Titans win would do more than just move them to 1-1. It would double Tennessee’s 10-point output from its opener, and that kind of jump would almost certainly require a few surprises. In that best-case version, Cam Ward and his pass-catchers would need to come up with major plays at key moments.
But there’s a rougher version of this game too, and it’s not hard to picture. Tennessee’s last meeting with a Jalen Hurts-led Eagles team ended in a 35-10 loss on the road in December of 2022. This one would be four points better than that, but it still wouldn’t feel much better if the game gets away from them.
Hurts probably isn’t about to repeat a 380-yard passing day, and with A.J. Brown out, Philadelphia is not quite the same machine it was at its peak. Even so, the Titans could still get buried if the Eagles start leaning on the run game the way the Jets did.
That’s the swing point here. Philadelphia leaned heavily on the Barkley-Hurts combination in its opener, and the two accounted for 129 of the Eagles’ 136 rushing yards. If Tennessee can’t slow that down, the rest of the matchup gets a lot uglier.
LB Cedric Gray returning to the field gives the Titans something to feel better about. But if Saleh’s defense turns in another game without a sack, Tennessee may already be looking at the loss column before kickoff ends.
