The Titans don’t have much margin for error in Week 2, and the path to making this one competitive starts up front. After getting rolled by the Jets in Week 1, Tennessee heads into a matchup with Philadelphia that already feels like a prove-it game, and the biggest question is whether the Titans can hold up long enough to give themselves a chance.
That begins with Cam Ward and the offensive line. Ward took three sacks against New York, and while not every one landed on him, Tennessee still needs cleaner protection this week.
That’s a tall order with the Eagles bringing one of the NFL’s most feared defensive fronts to town. Titans offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo pointed to “size” and “explosiveness” as the traits that make tackles like Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis such a problem.
If Ward gets that needed time, the next challenge is making the most of it against Philadelphia’s secondary. The Eagles did a good job of limiting Washington through the air on Sunday, but there was one clear soft spot.
Jayden Daniels went 7/9 for 83 yards and a score when targeting CB Cooper DeJean. Philadelphia still allowed two passing touchdowns and didn’t record an interception.
If Ward is sharp and Tennessee’s receivers keep trending in the right direction, there’s at least a lane for the Titans to stress that back end.
The final matchup lands on the other side of the ball, where Tennessee’s linebackers have to deal with Saquon Barkley. The Titans will hope to get veteran leader Cedric Gray back for that one, because last week’s loss was driven in large part by the run defense. The Jets piled up 152 rushing yards, with Breece Hall going for 102 of them and adding the game’s lone rushing touchdown.
Barkley’s first game was quieter by comparison, with 86 yards on 15 carries and no score, but that still looks like enough to hurt a defense that didn’t show much resistance against the ground game a week ago. Tennessee’s best answer would be to get rookie LB Anthony Hill Jr. on the field next to Gray, if Gray is available, and try to force Philadelphia into a more pass-heavy game plan. If the Titans can do that, they give themselves a real shot to drag this one into a fight.
