Titans Eye Bold Free Agency Move to Spark AFC South Rivalry

Titans' strategic move in free agency could set the stage for a heated rivalry in the AFC South.

The Tennessee Titans are gearing up for a big splash in free agency, armed with more cap space than any other team in the NFL. But having a hefty wallet doesn't mean they should spend without strategy. The Titans are looking to elevate their roster by finding players who fit seamlessly into their system, rather than just chasing big names.

A few intriguing free agents have been consistently linked to Tennessee-think Alec Pierce, Odafe Oweh, and Wan'Dale Robinson. But one name flying under the radar is Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Devin Lloyd. Lloyd could be a game-changer for the Titans' defense.

The Titans struck gold with their 2024 fourth-round pick, Cedric Gray. If he hadn't been sidelined by injuries, Gray was on pace for an eye-popping 200 tackles in his debut season as a starter. He’s set to thrive in Robert Saleh's aggressive defensive scheme.

Now, the Titans have a potential opportunity to spice up the AFC South rivalry by targeting Lloyd. The linebacker spot opposite Gray remains a question mark.

Saleh is known for his knack in developing linebackers, but adding someone like Lloyd could instantly solidify the position. If GM Mike Borgonzi and Saleh decide that James Williams is still too raw and Cody Barton isn’t the answer, Lloyd would be a perfect fit.

Lloyd's stats might not jump off the page, but his impact is undeniable. Last season, he showcased his versatility with five interceptions, six tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, and 10 quarterback hits.

Pairing him with a tackling machine like Gray could give the Titans a formidable duo. Plus, Gray's manageable cap hit makes Lloyd an even more attractive option financially.

Bringing in Lloyd would also give the Titans flexibility. They could continue to develop Williams, perhaps trying him as a "SAM" linebacker in Saleh's system. It might also allow Borgonzi to consider moving on from Barton, who could still appeal to teams in need of a fringe starter.

Off the field, this move would add fuel to the fire between Saleh and Jaguars coach Liam Coen. With Jacksonville focusing on re-signing offensive players like Cole Van Lanen and Jakobi Meyers, Lloyd will be eager to prove them wrong. And he'll have every opportunity to do so in Saleh's high-octane defense.

If Borgonzi's goal is to raise the team's baseline, giving Saleh an All-Pro talent like Lloyd alongside a 200-tackle powerhouse in Gray is a strong start. Add in Jeffery Simmons and a first-round pick on the defensive line, and the Titans could be crafting an elite defense in a single offseason.
