The Tennessee Titans may look set at linebacker on paper, but there’s still one roster battle worth watching when training camp opens: Dorian Mausi has a real shot to sneak onto the 53-man roster.
Cedric Gray is locked in after a monster season that saw him break the franchise’s single-season tackling record with 164. Cody Barton is back on the other side, and rookie Anthony Hill Jr. is expected to push for snaps right away. That leaves the Titans sorting through the depth behind the top three, with the fourth spot - and maybe even a fifth - up for grabs.
That’s where Mausi enters the picture. Claimed off waivers last August, he came back into the mix and turned heads during OTAs and minicamp. He’s still being viewed as an underdog, but he’s not just a body in camp.
The competition around him is crowded. James Williams, a 2024 seventh-round pick heading into his third season, is the in-house favorite for the fourth linebacker role.
Mohamoud Diabate, a veteran free-agent addition, is also in the mix. All three are fighting for the same slice of the roster.
Special teams could end up deciding it. Williams logged the second-most special teams snaps of any Titans player in 2025 with 377, while Mausi wasn’t far behind at 355.
Both bring the kind of value that could make coordinator John "Bones" Fassel push hard to keep them around at final cuts. Diabate, meanwhile, had 205 special teams snaps for the Cleveland Browns last season.
There’s also a layer of roster politics here. Williams was drafted by former general manager Ran Carthon, while Mausi was brought in by current GM Mike Borgonzi. Williams lost a training camp battle to Gray last offseason and still hasn’t broken through as a defensive starter, so the Titans could decide they’re ready to move on from the unfinished project.
Mausi, though, made the most of his chances in 2025. He recovered a fumble on special teams and, even without a defensive snap to his name, showed enough to keep himself in the conversation. The former Duke and Auburn standout heads into camp with momentum, and if the right things break his way, he could pull off a 53-man roster surprise.

With training camp set to open soon, the Titans roster looks mostly settled, but there is still room for Mike Borgonzi to keep scanning the veteran market. Rookies report July 23, veterans follow July 28, and the front office has a few spots where experience could still matter if the right fit shakes loose.
The most obvious areas are in the secondary and along the offensive line, where Tennessee could use another layer of competition and insurance. Kenny Moore would bring nickel experience, Obi Melifonwu has already been through a workout with the team, and a familiar tackle option could give the Titans a proven backup presence if they decide the depth chart still needs one more adjustment before camp gets rolling.
