Titans Backfield Could Change Fast If Nick Singleton Gets His Shot

Could Nick Singleton be the unexpected answer to the Titans' running back quandary if Tony Pollard is traded?

Tony Pollard’s name is suddenly sitting at the center of Tennessee’s backfield conversation, and if the Titans decide to move him for the reported asking price of a fourth-round pick, the ripple effect could be immediate.

That kind of deal would leave the Titans staring at a depth chart that already looks shaky. Tyjae Spears has been missing practices with regularity and hasn’t done much with his chances when he’s been on the field, which makes him a tough sell as the answer if Pollard is gone. Michael Carter has also worked his way into the mix, and Robert Saleh has already said Carter has more three-down value than Nick Singleton right now, which has helped Carter earn complimentary snaps.

Still, if Tennessee pulls the trigger on a Pollard trade, the rookie on the bench becomes the name to watch.

Singleton has barely been used so far, with just seven carries for 12 yards across two games. His most recent action came in the Titans’ Week 4 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, when he finished with four carries for 10 yards. That’s not much of a sample, but it’s also not enough to close the book on him.

The bigger point is simple: moving Pollard would blow the backfield wide open. Tennessee would be left sorting through a group of backs fighting over scraps, and the question becomes who deserves a real look if the job suddenly becomes available. Spears might be the obvious answer on paper, and Carter may feel like the safer option, but Singleton is the one the Titans still haven’t truly tested.

That matters because Tennessee used a fifth-round pick on him, and if they’re going to find out what they have, this is the moment. Otherwise, the next offseason could bring a new back into the room and push Singleton even further down the line before he ever gets a fair chance.

There’s also reason to believe the rookie has more in his bag than the current usage suggests. Singleton didn’t just arrive at Penn State; he left with the school record for career rushing touchdowns, total career touchdowns, and career all-purpose yards.

So if Pollard is dealt, Tennessee should at least give Singleton enough touches to see what he can do. Before the Titans bury him behind Kalel Mullings and Julius Chestnut, there’s a real case for letting the rookie run with it for a while. Chestnut, to his credit, has made an impact on special teams, but the backfield itself would still need answers.

With the deadline only four days away, Titans fans won’t be waiting long to find out whether that door opens for Singleton.

Brian Daboll May Have Finally Found What Titans Offense Needed

Brian Dabolls latest tweak in Week 8 gave the Titans offense a different look, and for one afternoon against the Bengals, it looked a lot more like the kind of unit Tennessee has been trying to build. By leaning harder into play-action passes from under-center formations, the offense found a rhythm it had been missing, turning in its most efficient showing of the season.

The shift mattered because Tennessee had become too easy to read before that, with defenses keying on under-center runs and taking away the element of surprise. Whether this is the start of a more permanent adjustment or just a one-game answer is still the question, but it was enough to suggest the Titans may have uncovered something worth keeping. Former Titans GM Just Added Fuel To Tennessee's Jaguars Showdown

Former Titans general manager Ran Carthon had plenty to say after Jacksonvilles 33-10 win over the Ravens, and his praise only sharpened the edge on whats next for Tennessee. Carthon called the Jaguars the most complete roster in the league, pointing to the way Liam Coen and Trevor Lawrence have meshed and noting how the team has stacked up dominant wins while building the NFLs best point differential.

For the Titans, it adds another layer to a matchup already carrying plenty of attention. Jacksonville is sitting at 6-2 and rolling into its next game with real momentum, while Tennessee now has to deal with a division rival that is being talked about in the league in a very different way than it was a year ago. Titans Midseason Grades Expose Whats Really Holding This Team Back

The Titans hit their bye week at 1-7, and the midseason picture is as uneven as the record suggests. There has been some real growth on offense, with Cam Ward settling in and Tony Pollard helping drive the rushing attack, while the offensive line has held up better than expected despite injuries. Even with the losses piling up, that side of the ball has shown more signs of direction than the standings would indicate.

The bigger problem has been everything around it. The defense has been hit hard since the Jeffery Simmons trade, and the secondary has not done enough to steady things when games tighten up. Special teams have been merely average, and the coaching staff has taken heat for shaky play calling and an offense that still lacks a clear identity, leaving the Titans with plenty to sort through before the second half begins.
