Titans Advance Talks With Saleh and Nagy After Key Interview Moves

The Titans are narrowing their head coaching search, bringing two seasoned NFL coordinators back for a closer look.

The Titans are deep into their head coaching search, and the latest developments show they’re not leaving any stone unturned. On Monday, the team completed in-person interviews with two high-profile coordinators: Robert Saleh of the 49ers and Matt Nagy of the Chiefs.

For Saleh, this marked his first formal sit-down with the Titans. Originally scheduled for a virtual meeting on Sunday, the 49ers' playoff exit at the hands of the Seahawks on Saturday opened the door for an in-person conversation. That timing worked out well for both sides, giving the Titans a chance to get a more complete picture of one of the most experienced defensive minds in the league.

Saleh brings 21 seasons of NFL experience to the table, including two separate stints as the 49ers’ defensive coordinator. His first run with San Francisco (2017-2020) helped build the foundation for one of the league’s most physical, fast-flowing defenses.

He then took on the head coaching job with the Jets from 2021 to 2024, where he posted a 20-36 record. While the wins didn’t always come in bunches, Saleh’s defensive identity remained clear: aggressive fronts, disciplined secondaries, and an emphasis on toughness.

He returned to the 49ers to run the defense again, and his impact was immediate. His familiarity with the Titans’ front office and his experience leading both a defense and a full roster make him a compelling candidate.

On the other side of the ball, Matt Nagy brings a different flavor. He’s been part of the Chiefs’ offensive machine for nine of the past ten seasons, most recently serving as offensive coordinator after rejoining the team in 2022. Before that, he was the senior offensive assistant and quarterbacks coach-working closely with Patrick Mahomes in a system that’s redefined modern NFL offense.

Nagy also has head coaching experience under his belt, leading the Bears from 2018 to 2021. His tenure in Chicago had its ups and downs, but his offensive acumen has never been in question. He’s known for his creativity, pre-snap motion, and ability to scheme receivers open-traits that have helped keep Kansas City’s offense humming even as personnel has changed over the years.

This wasn’t Nagy’s first meeting with the Titans. He previously interviewed virtually, but the team brought him in for a face-to-face to dig deeper. That’s a sign of serious interest.

With 15 candidates interviewed over the first two weeks of the search, the Titans are clearly casting a wide net. But bringing in Saleh and Nagy for in-person interviews signals that the team is starting to narrow its focus. Both coaches offer something different-Saleh with his defensive leadership and steady presence, Nagy with his offensive innovation and quarterback development chops.

The Titans are at a crossroads, and the decision they make here could shape the franchise for years to come. Whether they lean defense with Saleh or offense with Nagy, they’re talking to candidates with real experience and a track record of leading NFL teams.
