Titans Add Hendon Hooker And Shift QB Battle

Titans shake up the quarterback landscape by signing former college star Hendon Hooker, raising the stakes for Cam Ward's pivotal second season.

The Cam Ward era in Tennessee kicked off with some promising moments, but it didn’t quite hit the high notes expected from a No. 1 overall pick. Ward demonstrated grit and raw talent, pushing through all 17 games while racking up 3,169 yards, 15 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. Yet, the rookie learning curve was steep.

The Titans struggled to a 3-14 finish, tying for the league’s worst record. Ward’s first season wrapped up with a shoulder injury in a tough 41-7 loss to Jacksonville in the finale. His 59.8% completion rate and 33.2 QBR were the lowest in the NFL, highlighting the challenges he faced.

As Ward gears up for a crucial second season, the Titans have made a significant move at quarterback. They’ve signed Hendon Hooker, a former Tennessee Volunteers standout, adding an intriguing layer to their roster.

Hooker returns to Nashville with a decorated college career. His 2022 season was a spectacle, with 3,135 passing yards, 27 touchdowns, and just two interceptions, earning him a top-five finish in Heisman Trophy voting. He was named SEC Offensive Player of the Year and played a pivotal role in putting the Volunteers back on the national stage, even reaching the top spot in the College Football Playoff rankings.

Despite his college success, Hooker’s NFL journey has been a winding road. Drafted in the third round in 2023, he moved between rosters and practice squads, with stints at the Detroit Lions, Carolina Panthers, and New York Jets. He completed 6-of-9 passes for 62 yards in limited action with the Lions.

Ward is now entering his second year, a pivotal moment when teams typically look for significant progress. The Titans are in a rebuilding phase and can’t afford stagnation at quarterback.

Bringing in Hooker offers a low-risk, high-reward option with genuine potential, system knowledge, and local appeal. If Ward is sidelined, Hooker provides a capable alternative to keep the offense moving.
