Tennessee Titans Eye Dynamic Change with Potential Star Running Back Acquisition

Titans could transform their offensive strategy by targeting a powerful, undervalued running back in NFL free agency.

The Tennessee Titans are eyeing opportunities to bolster their running back position in the upcoming NFL free agency. With the potential departure of Tony Pollard due to salary cap considerations, the Titans could find themselves in need of a new backfield leader. This year's pool of free-agent running backs offers some intriguing possibilities.

Fans have their eyes on Breece Hall and Kenneth Walker III, both of whom are currently with their respective teams. Until these players are officially signed or tagged, they remain on the Titans' radar as potential targets.

Should Hall and Walker remain unavailable, the Titans might consider other options. One name that stands out is Rico Dowdle, a dynamic runner from the Carolina Panthers who could fit well with the Titans' strategy.

Dowdle made waves with the Dallas Cowboys in 2024, rushing for 1,079 yards despite starting as a backup. His connection with Titans' current special teams staff, including John "Bones" Fassel and Rayna Stewart, could make him an appealing choice. Last offseason, Dowdle signed a one-year deal with the Panthers and continued to impress, racking up 1,076 yards and a career-high six touchdowns in 2025.

According to projections, Dowdle might land a two-year, $13 million contract, averaging $6.5 million annually. This seems reasonable considering his consistent 1,000-yard seasons and rugged running style.

However, Dowdle will turn 28 in June, and teams often hesitate to offer multi-year contracts to running backs approaching their thirties. This could explain why his projected market value remains under $7 million per year, despite his strong performances.

Dowdle's physical, between-the-tackles approach would complement Brian Daboll's offense well. With Tyjae Spears handling the change-of-pace duties, Dowdle could provide a balanced attack. If Hall and Walker aren't available, Dowdle could be a smart alternative for the Titans, offering a blend of power and experience to their backfield.
