The Patriots are making a strategic move by signing safety Kevin Byard to a one-year deal worth $9 million. This signing reunites Byard with Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel, rekindling a connection from their days with the Tennessee Titans. Both have continued to thrive in their respective careers.
Byard, now 32, originally entered the NFL as a third-round pick for the Titans in 2016. After completing his rookie contract, which included a base salary of $2.025 million in 2019, he secured a lucrative five-year, $70.5 million extension.
In 2023, the Titans adjusted his salary to $4 million. Byard was set to earn $9.6 million in 2024 before being traded to the Eagles in exchange for 2024 fifth and sixth-round picks and veteran safety Terrell Edmunds. Following his release by the Eagles, Byard joined the Bears on a two-year deal valued at up to $15 million.
During the 2025 season, Byard showcased his durability and skill by playing all 17 games for the Bears. He recorded 93 total tackles, four tackles for loss, seven interceptions, and eight pass defenses, proving his continued impact on the field.
Byard's consistent performance has earned him a spot on our Top 100 2026 NFL Free Agents list, highlighting his value in the league.
