Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown recently stirred the pot with a hint of interest in joining the New England Patriots, now coached by Mike Vrabel. This connection isn't new-Vrabel was Brown's head coach during his time with the Tennessee Titans from the 2019 NFL Draft until Brown was traded to the Eagles in April 2022.
At the NFL Scouting Combine, Vrabel opened up about his ongoing relationship with Brown, emphasizing the personal growth he's witnessed. "It’s meant a lot," Vrabel shared.
"I’ve watched him mature. I’m proud of him as a father and a husband.
Those are the things that truly matter."
Vrabel was clear about his reluctance to trade Brown back when he was with the Titans. He even reached out to Brown before the Eagles faced the Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII in February 2023, showcasing the genuine bond they share. Brown, in a recent podcast, praised Vrabel for holding every player accountable, a quality that fostered team unity.
"We stay in touch, offering support during both good and challenging times," Vrabel said, highlighting the mutual respect and connection they maintain.
With trade rumors surrounding Brown since last offseason, Eagles GM Howie Roseman mentioned he would "listen" to offers for the 28-year-old. The Patriots, in need of a receiver, naturally sparked questions about Vrabel's interest in pursuing Brown.
Vrabel treaded carefully, acknowledging the complexities of trades. "We’ll explore every opportunity to strengthen our roster," he noted. "Trades involve a lot of back and forth, and as we approach the draft, those discussions will intensify."
Brown, who inked a three-year, $96M extension with $84M guaranteed in 2024, was also linked to the Denver Broncos by ESPN's Bill Barnwell. The Broncos, who fell to the Patriots in this year's AFC Championship, could be another potential suitor, adding intrigue to Brown's future.
