Keenan Allen’s Colts debut lasted one preseason game - and then came a much bigger off-field headline.
Hours after Indianapolis wrapped up its preseason Week 3 matchup against the Detroit Lions, Allen was reportedly arrested in downtown Indianapolis on alleged DUI charges, according to Justin Powell of FOX 59, who cited an IMPD police report and jail booking records. The arrest happened around 1 a.m. ET early Sunday morning.
Allen was booked on preliminary charges of DWI and DWI endangering a person, both misdemeanors. Powell reported, “According to an IMPD police report and jail booking, a 34-year-old Keenan Allen, matching the description of the Colts player was arrested for DUI in downtown Indianapolis around 1 a.m.,”
The report was later backed up by other outlets, including The Athletic. “Colts WR Keenan Allen was arrested Sunday morning and charged with two misdemeanors for DUI, according to online jail records,” The Athletic’s James Boyd wrote.
The timing makes the situation especially jarring. Allen had just been officially signed by the Colts on Aug. 19, with Indianapolis dealing with serious depth issues at wide receiver.
Saturday’s game against Detroit, which kicked off at 1 p.m. ET, was his first appearance in a Colts uniform.
He finished with one catch for 24 yards.
Now, Allen could be staring at league discipline depending on how everything unfolds legally. Under the NFL’s policy and program for substances of abuse, a first-offense DUI without aggravating circumstances typically brings a two-game suspension without pay. It’s still too early to know whether Allen will actually be suspended, or when any discipline would come if it does.
Allen is entering his 14th NFL season after being selected in the third round by the then-San Diego Chargers in 2013. He spent all but one of his first 13 seasons with the Chargers before playing the 2024 season with the Chicago Bears.
Through 171 career games and 152 starts, Allen has 1,055 receptions for 12,051 yards and 70 touchdowns. He’s been named to six Pro Bowls and was the 2017 AP Comeback Player of the Year.
