The Tennessee Titans have reason to feel better about their own direction this offseason, but the bigger gift may be what’s happening down the road in Jacksonville. While the Titans upgraded on paper and the Houston Texans also made strong moves, the Jaguars put together an offseason that raised plenty of eyebrows.
That’s a tough turn for a team that went 13-4 last season and looked to be climbing under first-year head coach Liam Coen. Trevor Lawrence, too, posted the best year of his career. Even so, the choices Jacksonville made this offseason have left real questions about how sustainable that success will be.
The Jaguars entered the draft already short on capital after sending multiple picks to land former Heisman winner Travis Hunter in 2025. That deal included their 2026 first-round pick, which pushed their first selection all the way to No.
- When Jacksonville finally went on the clock, general manager James Gladstone used that pick on tight end Nate Boerkircher.
On paper, the fit made some sense. Coen’s offense leans on multiple-tight-end looks, so the Jaguars had a reason to address the position.
But the value was the issue. Boerkircher in the second round looked like a major reach, especially given his production at the college level.
His best season produced 198 receiving yards, and he finished with nearly 400 yards across five seasons. In a draft built on balancing talent and value, Jacksonville seemed to miss badly.
The roster losses only deepen the concern. Linebacker Devin Lloyd left for the Carolina Panthers after a 2025 season in which he piled up 81 tackles and five interceptions. He was tied for the most interceptions by a linebacker, and Jacksonville is going to feel the loss of that kind of playmaking in the middle of the defense.
The backfield also took a hit when Travis Etienne signed with the New Orleans Saints. Etienne delivered his best season in 2025 with about 1,400 offensive yards, making him a significant departure for Coen’s offense. The Jaguars added Chris Rodriguez to work with sophomore Bhayshul Tuten, but Rodriguez is not the same caliber of player, and New Orleans fans are already celebrating the addition.
Between the blockbuster Travis Hunter trade in 2025 and the Boerkircher selection this year, Gladstone has put himself in a tricky spot. Even if the Jaguars keep winning, the long-term picture is getting harder to trust. Coen and Lawrence still give Jacksonville enough firepower to stay in the AFC South race, but the offseason has made the team’s future look a lot less secure.
