In a surprising offseason twist, Lance McCutcheon has announced his retirement from the NFL. This follows the recent retirements of Cleveland Browns linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah and Bears center Drew Dalman, both stepping away at notably young ages.
McCutcheon, who made his mark as a standout wide receiver at Bozeman High School and Montana State University, shared his decision on social media. His post featured a heartfelt message and photos in the jerseys of all the teams he played for: the Los Angeles Rams, Houston Texans, New York Jets, Pittsburgh Steelers, and most recently, the Tennessee Titans.
He expressed gratitude to everyone who supported his journey, saying, “I couldn’t have accomplished anything that I did or made it where I did without the help from so many different people. The list of thanks that are owed is never-ending.”
Though McCutcheon may not have become the undrafted sensation some fans hoped for, he certainly left an impression. He led the NFL in receiving yards during the 2022 preseason, earning the admiration of fans across the league. His professional path included practice squad stints with the Texans, Jets, Steelers, and Titans, after his initial year with the Rams.
Standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing 203 pounds, McCutcheon was known for his athleticism, running a 4.57 40-yard dash at Montana State. His college career was impressive, highlighted by a First-Team All-Big Sky selection in 2021, with 1,219 receiving yards and nine touchdowns on 61 receptions.
During his rookie season with the Rams, McCutcheon appeared in 10 games, primarily contributing on special teams and recording two solo tackles. While he didn’t catch a pass in regular-season play, he was targeted five times.
As McCutcheon steps away from the gridiron, fans and teammates alike are eager to see what his next chapter holds.
