Three weeks into the season, the NFL has already produced a familiar kind of misery: five teams sitting at 0-3, with no wins in sight as the calendar turns to October. The Texans, Titans, Dolphins, Chargers and Buccaneers all entered Monday still looking for their first victory, and history says that is a brutal place to be.
The first hurdle is obvious. Even getting to the playoffs after an 0-2 start is hard enough.
Eight teams opened the 2026 campaign 0-2, and three of them - the Colts, Commanders and Falcons - got into the win column in Week 3. The other five now have the deeper problem: they’re trying to dig out from 0-3.
That hole has swallowed almost everybody over the years. From 1980 to 2020, only six teams started 0-3 and still reached the postseason, according to Pro Football Talk.
The 1981 Jets bounced back to finish 10-5-1. The 1995 Lions were 3-6 before ripping off seven straight wins to get in.
The 1982 Buccaneers also made it after an 0-3 start, though that season was its own strange animal because of the strike; they finished 5-4 and got in as one of 16 playoff teams.
There’s also the 1992 Chargers, who are the lone 0-4 team on the list and the only one of those teams to win a playoff game. Starter John Friesz suffered a season-ending injury in the preseason, and Stan Humphries had a rough first month, throwing one touchdown and eight interceptions in his first four games. After a 27-0 loss to the Oilers in Week 4, they flipped the season and dropped only one game the rest of the way.
The other two examples fit a similar pattern. The 1998 Bills and 2018 Texans both lost three one-score games before they finally started winning. Buffalo’s turnaround included a quarterback switch, with Doug Flutie replacing Rob Johnson and taking over the job during the winning streak.
What stands out from that group is how strong the recovery usually had to be. Leaving aside the 1982 Buccaneers, the other five teams all got to 10 or 11 wins after their 0-3 starts. This was not some modern scenario where a weak division handed somebody a playoff berth with a losing record.
The numbers get even harsher in the current playoff setup. Since 2021, when the league expanded to a 14-team bracket, only one of 25 teams has reached the postseason after starting 0-3: the 2025 Texans. Since the NFL expanded to 32 teams in 2002, the Texans are also the only franchise to make the playoffs after an 0-3 start.
That at least gives the current Texans something to point to, even if they’ve dug themselves into the same kind of early-season mess for the second straight year. Houston has started 0-2 or worse in three of four seasons under DeMeco Ryans and C.J.
Stroud, and still made the postseason every year so far. Last season, they were 3-5 before winning nine straight games into the playoffs.
The Texans have not come close to their preseason expectations, but they remain one of the league’s most talented teams, especially on defense, and can still go toe-to-toe with anyone if they stop beating themselves.
The situation looks very different for the Titans and Dolphins, who were not projected to contend this season. For them, the task is simpler: start stacking wins, keep developing and try to steady the mood.
The Chargers and Buccaneers are the ones who really stand out as disappointments. Los Angeles has one of the toughest schedules ahead and has given no indication it’s ready to stop self-inflicted mistakes. Tampa Bay, meanwhile, has been a disaster through three games, and now may have to manage without Baker Mayfield for three weeks because of a thumb injury.
So while the Texans still have a path, however steep, the rest of the 0-3 crowd is staring at a very unfriendly history lesson.

Titans Already Have An Uncomfortable Cam Ward Question
Cam Wards first stretch as the Titans franchise quarterback has not given the team much comfort. Since going first overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, he has battled through a rough opening run that has left him near the bottom of several passing categories, and the backdrop around him has not made the job easier. Tennessee has been working with an inexperienced receiving group, while the coaching situation has not offered much stability for a young passer trying to find his footing.
Still, the longer this goes on, the harder it becomes to separate Wards development from the organizations future planning. Sports Illustrateds Albert Breer raised the possibility that if the losses keep piling up, Tennessee could eventually be looking at quarterback again in the 2027 NFL Draft, which is the kind of conversation no team wants to be having this early with a player taken first overall.
