Carnell Tate’s first days at Titans training camp have done nothing to quiet the buzz around the rookie wideout.
Across two practices on Wednesday and Thursday, Tate kept flashing the kind of early connection with franchise quarterback Cam Ward that has quickly become one of the camp’s main storylines. On Wednesday, he was credited with a practice-high three catches, including a red-zone touchdown from Ward that made the rounds on social media. He added another catch on Thursday.
That kind of production fits the broader picture from Tate’s offseason. At the Titans’ first open practice of the offseason, he caught three touchdowns from Ward with reporters watching, and Wednesday’s score carried a similar feel.
Thursday, though, belonged more to the defense. The Titans’ offense had a tougher time finding rhythm, and both Ward and backup quarterback Mitch Trubisky were intercepted.
Tennessee’s defense also stacked up pass breakups and quarterback pressures throughout the session. The day’s top highlight came when receiver Elic Ayomanor went up over cornerback Cor’Dale Flott for a touchdown.
Tate’s quieter Thursday shouldn’t be read as a setback. The offense as a whole was less consistent, and when the unit was humming on Wednesday, Tate was right in the middle of the action as a playmaker.
The Titans are clearly viewing Tate as someone who can grow into the offense’s No. 1 receiver. He’s expected to share starting duties with $70 million free agent addition Wan’Dale Robinson, while Calvin Ridley is also back after a contract restructure following a 1,000-yard season for the Titans in 2024. One of those three wideouts is expected to lead Brian Daboll’s offense in receiving in 2026.
Tennessee practices again on Saturday, the first session open to fans. That should give Tate and Ward another chance to put on a show.
