Oklahoma is making a midseason change on offense.
Ben Arbuckle has been fired as the Sooners’ offensive coordinator, according to multiple reports Monday, just two days after Oklahoma’s attack sputtered again in a 42-25 home loss to South Carolina. The move comes with the unranked Sooners sitting at 4-4 and heading into Week 10 with plenty of questions about what comes next.
Per SoonerScoop, tight ends coach Jason Witten will take over playcalling duties for the rest of the season.
The timing tells the story. Oklahoma’s offense managed only 118 yards and three points through three quarters against the Gamecocks, and the Sooners enter their trip to Florida ranked 111th nationally in total offense and 108th in scoring. They’re also 13th among 16 SEC teams in yards per game.
Arbuckle, who came to Norman after serving as Washington State’s offensive coordinator, was in his second season as the Sooners’ playcaller. He was making $1.5 million per year on a deal that was set to run through the end of the 2027 season. He was hired after the 2024 season, when Seth Littrell was fired.
After the loss to South Carolina, Brent Venables wasn’t ready to address possible staff changes.
"Yeah, I'm not talking about anything like that," Venables said.
Arbuckle, though, took the blame for the offense’s struggles.
"I own it. I'm not mad at any of those players," Arbuckle said. "If I'm frustrated at anybody it's with myself because I didn't have them ready to come out and play their A-game.”
The problems have piled up across the board. Injuries have hit an offensive line that brought back five players who started games for Oklahoma last season, and the running game has dropped to 119th nationally. But the biggest issue under Arbuckle has been at quarterback.
Fifth-year quarterback John Mateer, whom Arbuckle brought with him from Washington State, has not matched expectations. He had a rough Saturday, missing open receivers and finishing 26 of 43 for 244 yards and two touchdowns. Mateer’s 139.7 passer rating ranks 65th nationally.
“Tentative,” Arbuckle said Saturday about Mateer’s performance. “He's the main one I was talking about right there.
Just not pulling the trigger on some things. Maybe getting a little too greedy on some things.”
Witten, 44, joined Oklahoma’s staff this offseason as tight ends coach, and he’ll now be responsible for calling plays over the final four games, starting with Saturday’s 6:45 p.m. CT matchup at Florida on SEC Network.
OU’s offensive numbers under Arbuckle reflect the uneven season. In 2025, the Sooners averaged 354.3 yards per game, scored 26.2 points per game, averaged 235.8 passing yards and 118.5 rushing yards per game.

Titans Sent A Clear Message About Jeffery Simmons After His Trade
Jeffery Simmons departure to Chicago did not go unnoticed in Tennessee, and the Titans made sure of that in their next game. The defensive line showed up with red sleeves as a nod to the veteran tackle, a small but visible tribute to a player who had become a central figure in the room and on the field.
Solomon Thomas spoke about Simmons impact on the team and the gesture that followed his trade, underscoring how much respect he had earned inside the building. For a defense trying to move forward without one of its defining voices, the tribute said plenty about the standard Simmons left behind and the void the Titans now have to fill. [Read more 🡒]
Titans Trade Drama Just Took A Wild Jeffery Simmons Turn
Trade chatter around Jeffery Simmons took an unusual turn when Giants coach John Harbaugh confirmed he reached out directly to Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk about a possible deal. The move came after New York reportedly was not getting anywhere through Tennessee general manager Mike Borgonzi, which pushed Harbaugh to try a different route as the sides explored whether there was any real traction on the defensive tackle.
Harbaugh also made clear he has no interest in following any unwritten etiquette that might keep coaches from picking up the phone on matters like this, saying he would make similar calls again if needed. For Tennessee, it adds another layer to a situation already worth watching, since Simmons remains the kind of player who can alter a defense and draw interest even when the usual front-office path is not producing movement. Titans Rebuild Just Put Jacob Martin At The Center Of A Debate
Jacob Martins best game of the season came in a loss that only sharpened the bigger conversation around the Titans direction. In the overtime defeat to Cincinnati, the edge rusher piled up three sacks and nine quarterback pressures, the kind of disruptive night that stands out even on a team sitting at 1-7 and deep in a rebuilding stretch.
With the November 10 trade deadline approaching, Martin has suddenly become one of the more interesting names on Tennessees roster. The Titans have already shown a willingness to move pieces as they sort through the future, and a productive pass rusher on a struggling team naturally draws attention, even if no deal has been confirmed.
