3 Titans Rookies Are Still Waiting For Their Chance

Despite high expectations, several Tennessee Titans rookies have yet to make their mark on the field this season.

The Tennessee Titans have plenty of rookie talent worth talking about, but not every first-year player has jumped in and made an immediate mark.

This class does include a few newcomers already drawing real attention: Carnell Tate as a potential Offensive Rookie of the Year, Anthony Hill Jr. as a potential Defensive Rookie of the Year, and Fernando Carmona as a starting guard. But there are also three rookies who haven’t done much on the field yet.

That doesn’t mean the door is closed on them. Last season is proof enough of how quickly things can change, with SCB Marcus Harris taking time to get on the field before working his way into a starting role, even if Alontae Taylor may still have something to say about that.

For now, though, these are the three rookies who have been total non-factors so far.

Nick Singleton has already gotten a few chances, but the results haven’t been there. The former Penn State standout has struggled with vision and awareness, and too often he has turned decent blocking into wasted plays by failing to maximize what was in front of him.

The skill set is still obvious, though. He should be dangerous with the ball in his hands, and if a Tony Pollard trade happens, Singleton would have a real opening to show he can turn his athletic traits into actual production.

Jackie Marshall’s path looked like it might open up after Jordan Elliott was released following an alleged incident, but that opportunity has not gone his way. Instead of climbing the depth chart, Marshall got passed by Nazir Stackhouse and Timmy Horne.

That said, the Titans still see something worth developing. Marshall brings an explosive, upfield style as a defensive tackle, while Horne is more of a run-stopper, which helps explain why Horne was the choice to fill Elliott’s role.

Marshall may still have a shot to contribute later on.

Pat Coogan’s situation is a little different. Injuries to Carmona and Jackson Slater created a possible lane for the Titans to kick Coogan over to guard and see what he could do there.

Instead, the team elevated Atonio Mafi, which points to Coogan being viewed strictly as a center for now. Even so, if the Titans decide to get creative later in the season, there’s a chance he could see some work in a non-traditional role, such as fullback or tight end, simply to get some NFL reps under his belt.

Jeffery Simmons Revealed The Part Of Leaving Titans That Hurt Most

Jeffery Simmons did not sound like a player focused only on the football side of a major move. After being traded to the Chicago Bears, the defensive tackle opened up about how difficult it was to leave his family in Nashville, a personal layer to a deal that already carried plenty of weight for both teams.

Chicago paid a steep price to get him, sending two first-round picks to Tennessee, a clear sign the Bears believe Simmons can be a difference-maker as they chase a division title under coach Dennis Allen. He arrives with strong defensive production this season, but the emotional adjustment may be just as real as the football transition as he settles into a new locker room and a new city. Titans Still Have 3 Reasons To Believe Against Cincinnati

Even after the close loss to Cleveland and the stunning trade of defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons to the Chicago Bears, there are still a few signs Tennessee is not simply limping into Week 8. The Titans have found a little more rhythm on the ground, and the offense has put up more points in back-to-back weeks, which at least suggests some progress as they get ready for Cincinnati.

The defense has also given the Titans something to hang onto, forcing five turnovers over the last two games and creating extra chances for an offense that has not had much margin for error. Cincinnati brings a dangerous attack, so Tennessee will need those recent positives to travel with it, but the broader picture is not as bleak as it might have looked a week ago. [Read more 🡒]

Titans Have An Alontae Taylor Problem They Can't Ignore

The Titans have quietly reached a point where Alontae Taylors role is no longer something they can treat as a minor rotation issue. Joshua Williams has started consecutive games and held up well, while Cor'Dale Flott and Marcus Harris have also given Tennessee steadier play on the back end, leaving Taylor with fewer defensive snaps than expected for a player the team still has reason to keep involved.

A move to nickelback has been floated as a possible way to get Taylor back into the mix, but the path there is not simple when the current group is functioning. Williams strong stretch has made the depth chart harder to crack, and Taylors own production has lagged behind, which leaves Tennessee weighing fit against form as it tries to settle on the best use of its secondary.
