TCU Stuns Fans by Bringing in New Cornerbacks Coach

TCU taps into Benny Boyd's defensive expertise to elevate their cornerbacks, capitalizing on his impressive tenure at Wyoming.

TCU has made a strategic move by bringing Benny Boyd on board as their new cornerbacks coach, a decision announced Friday morning. Boyd steps into this role after a successful stint at Wyoming, where he served as the co-special teams coordinator and cornerbacks coach for six years. This move sees Julius Brown transitioning to the role of assistant cornerbacks coach.

Boyd's tenure at Wyoming was marked by impressive defensive stats that caught national attention. Wyoming led the nation in third-down defense, holding opponents to a mere 26 percent conversion rate.

They capped their season by limiting offensive powerhouses Boise State and Washington State to a combined 31 points, showcasing their defensive prowess. The Cowboys also led the Mountain West Conference in kickoff return yards, ranking 14th nationally.

In 2023, Wyoming celebrated a standout season, securing nine wins for the first time since their 10-2 run in 1996. Their defense was a force, ranking 26th in the nation for turnovers gained and third in the Mountain West.

They were also seventh nationally with 11 fumble recoveries. The defense excelled in limiting opponents' passing efficiency, ranking 24th in fewest yards allowed per pass attempt.

They stood strong in scoring defense, allowing just 22.3 points per game, and were third in the conference in total defense, conceding only 357.8 yards per game.

The 2022 season saw Wyoming's defense ranked second in the Mountain West and 21st nationally in sacks, averaging 2.85 per game. They also ranked second in the conference and 33rd in the FBS for defensive touchdowns, scoring two.

Boyd's special teams unit was effective, blocking two kicks to rank third in the conference and 36th nationally. Boyd's coaching acumen was evident as he guided cornerback Cam Stone to First Team All-Mountain West honors from Phil Steele, along with other accolades from Pro Football Focus and conference coaches.

In 2021, Wyoming's defensive lineup featured six players who earned All-Mountain West honors, including both starting cornerbacks. C.J. Coldon and Azizi Hearn were recognized with Second Team All-MW honors, highlighting the impact of Boyd's coaching on the field.

With Boyd now at TCU, fans can look forward to seeing how his defensive expertise and strategic insights will bolster the Horned Frogs' secondary.
