TCU Opens With One Big Test For Its New-Look Roster

As TCU women's basketball kicks off their pursuit of a third straight Big 12 title, a youthful lineup featuring standout transfers looks to extend a formidable home winning streak against Oral Roberts.

No. 15 TCU starts its 2026-27 women’s basketball season Tuesday night with a familiar setting and a very different roster.

The Horned Frogs host Oral Roberts at Schollmaier Arena at 6:30 p.m. CT, kicking off a seven-game homestand to open the year. TCU has turned its home floor into a fortress, winning 44 straight games at Schollmaier Arena - the longest active home winning streak in college basketball.

The challenge now is blending that home-court edge with a roster that looks nothing like the one that powered the program’s rise. After leaning on veteran transfers in recent seasons, head coach Mark Campbell is now guiding a younger group built around players with multiple years left.

Even with the turnover, TCU still brought in help through the portal. The Horned Frogs added junior guard Lanie Grant from North Carolina, junior point guard Jadyn Wooten from Oklahoma State and sophomore forward Lara Somfai from Stanford.

Somfai is already drawing plenty of attention. She landed on the preseason watch list for the Katrina McClain Award, which goes to the top power forward in women’s college basketball. She is one of 20 players on the list and just the second player in TCU history to earn that recognition, joining Amy Okonkwo, who made the list in 2018-19.

Her freshman season at Stanford gave a clear picture of why she’s on the radar. Somfai averaged 10.8 points and 9.1 rebounds while starting all 32 games. The Hungary native finished 10th nationally among freshmen in rebounding average and was one of only two power-conference freshmen to put up at least 10 points and nine rebounds per game.

She also collected ACC All-Freshman honors, was named ACC Rookie of the Week four times and posted seven double-doubles, the most by an ACC freshman.

Inside, TCU will also lean on junior center Clara Silva, the lone returning starter from last season. Silva was named to the preseason watch list for the 2026 Lisa Leslie Award, which honors the nation’s top center. She is one of 20 players on that list and one of three Big 12 centers included.

The 6-foot-7 Silva averaged nine points, 7.4 rebounds and 1.8 blocks in 23.9 minutes per game last season. She finished with six double-doubles, ranked second in the Big 12 with 67 total blocks and also earned a spot on the Naismith Trophy Player of the Year watch list and the Preseason All-Big 12 Team.

Her presence will matter as TCU tries to define itself with so many new faces around her.

The Horned Frogs have handled Oral Roberts well in the series, leading 7-4 all time and winning the last three meetings. The teams last played on Nov. 6, 2023, when TCU beat Oral Roberts 76-56 at Schollmaier Arena in Campbell’s first game as head coach.

Oral Roberts went 15-15 last season.

Tuesday’s game is the first of three in six days for TCU, which returns to Schollmaier Arena on Thursday to face Le Moyne. For Campbell, it’s the first real glimpse of how this younger roster will fit together, with Silva providing the continuity and Somfai among the newcomers expected to play major roles.

TCUs Defense Is Keeping The Bowl Push Alive For Now

A defense that had been searching for a signature performance finally gave TCU one Saturday in a 22-16 win over Kansas, a result that nudged the Horned Frogs back to .500 at 4-4 and kept their bowl hopes from slipping any further. Max Carroll, Koron Hayward, Markis Deal and Jamel Johnson all had their fingerprints on the game, helping a unit that bent at times but made the key stops when the margin tightened.

The offense never fully took over, but it did enough to pair with that defensive effort, and the protection in front of Jaden Craig looked steadier after the recent coaching changes up front. Craigs day was more about managing the game than lighting it up through the air, yet TCU still found the finish it needed to survive another close one and leave the bigger questions about the offense for another week. TCUs Big 12 Title Path Looks Different Heading Into This Season

The Big 12 womens basketball preseason polls have a familiar look at the top, with Oklahoma State, TCU, Baylor and West Virginia forming the leagues projected front group. For the Horned Frogs, that means another season opening with title expectations attached, even if the path to staying near the top looks different this time around. The leagues coaches and media both see the same contenders, and the roster movement around them has only sharpened the picture.

TCUs offseason has been defined by change, with Jadyn Wooten and Lanie Grant arriving through the portal to help reshape the backcourt. Around the league, other top teams have made their own splashy additions, from Oklahoma States new firepower to Baylors and West Virginias transfer help, while UCF, Cincinnati and Houston are forecast to have a tougher climb. For the Frogs, the challenge is not just holding onto their place in the race, but doing it with a different mix than the one that got them there. [Read more 🡒]

TCU Faces A Huge Test Against One Of The Big 12s Best

TCU is heading into an important Big 12 matchup against No. 24 Arizona, and the challenge is easy to see on both sides of the ball. The Wildcats have a quarterback in Noah Fifita who has settled in as one of the leagues more dangerous playmakers, and wide receiver Isaiah Mizell has become a key part of the offense as Arizona continues to look like a team built to make life difficult for opponents.

For the Horned Frogs, the test goes beyond just slowing down one passing game. Arizona has paired that offensive efficiency with a defense that has been difficult to move the ball against, giving this one the feel of a true measuring-stick game for TCU. If the Horned Frogs are going to come out of it with momentum, they will have to handle a front that brings pressure and a team that has been steady enough to stay near the top of the conference race.
