TCU Just Entered An Early Recruiting Battle Worth Watching

Despite interest from TCU and Houston, defensive lineman Charles Egbo remains committed to Texas State, highlighting the fierce competition for top Texas high school talent.

TCU has added another name to its recruiting board, this time reaching into the 2027 class for Iowa Colony defensive lineman Charles Egbo.

Egbo announced the offer Sept. 19 after talking with TCU head coach Sonny Dykes, giving the Horned Frogs a chance to get in the mix as his recruitment keeps building. The Iowa Colony standout already has a verbal commitment to Texas State, a pledge he made in June, but the latest interest from TCU and Houston has given him more options.

The new offer doesn’t change his current commitment, but it does show how quickly his profile is expanding. Texas State still has the original edge in the race, while TCU and Houston have both stepped in with fresh attention.

Egbo is listed as a defensive lineman, though there’s some variation in how recruiting services measure him. On3 has him at 6-foot-4 and 275 pounds, while Dave Campbell’s Texas Football lists him at 6-foot-5 and 275 pounds.

The rankings paint the picture of a prospect still being evaluated. On3 has Egbo at No. 2,234 nationally, No. 226 among defensive linemen and No. 293 in Texas. Dave Campbell’s Texas Football recently gave him a three-star rating and pointed to his length and explosiveness on defense, while also noting he could contribute on either side of the line.

That kind of versatility is part of what makes him interesting to college staffs. Even with defensive lineman listed next to his name, his physical tools and experience give coaches room to think about where he might fit long term.

TCU’s push for Egbo fits into a broader recruiting pattern as the program continues to work Texas prospects across multiple classes. The Frogs recently offered Lake Dallas freshman wide receiver Ben Cornist and are also pursuing four-star 2028 receiver Jacolby Campbell. They’ve also built relationships with players like Vernon linebacker Tyce Payne, another defender weighing his future options.

Egbo’s own message after the offer captured the moment: “After a great conversation with @CoachSonnyDykes I'm blessed to recieve my 8th D1 Offer from @TCUFootball @coachrgarza @DubG18 @ICHSBOOSTER @IC_PioneersFB pic.twitter.com/8yC6F5ovoI”

For TCU, the next move is simple: keep the relationship going and keep tracking how Egbo develops at Iowa Colony. He’s still committed to Texas State, but the Horned Frogs have now entered the conversation, and that matters in a recruitment that’s clearly picking up steam.

TCU Faces A Bigger Question Than Expected Before No. 10 BYU

TCUs first availability report for the BYU matchup offered at least a little relief, with starting linebacker Max Carroll and backup offensive lineman Ryan Hughes absent from the list entirely, a sign they may be ready to go. Defensive end Zach Chapman and Perry Cole Jr. did show up as questionable, though coach Sonny Dykes said Chapman is expected to play, giving the Frogs some clarity at one of the more important spots on the defensive front.

Even so, the report adds another layer to a game that already carries real weight with No. 10 BYU coming to town. TCU has to sort through who is truly available and who is still trending toward game-time decision status, and the bigger concern may be how much of the defense is intact when the Frogs try to slow a ranked opponent that will put stress on every level of the unit. TCU Gets A Huge Chance To Respond Against No. 10 BYU

TCU gets a timely chance to steady itself Saturday at Amon G. Carter Stadium, where the Horned Frogs will welcome No. 10 BYU after a 2-2 start to the season. The matchup comes with a quick chance to reset after a loss to UCF that was defined by turnovers and penalties, the kind of self-inflicted problems that can turn a promising afternoon into a frustrating one.

BYU arrives in Fort Worth unbeaten at 3-0 and fresh off a bye week, which only raises the degree of difficulty for a TCU team trying to find its footing. The setting gives the Frogs a chance to answer at home against a ranked opponent, and with broadcast details already in place, the spotlight is set for a game that could say plenty about where this team is headed next. BYUs Best Edge At TCU Could Decide This Big 12 Test

BYU comes out of its bye week with a chance to reset the conversation in the Big 12, and TCU is in a similar spot in a different way. The Horned Frogs are still looking for their first win over a power conference opponent this season after falling to UNC and UCF, even as they handled Grambling and Arkansas State, so this meeting has plenty riding on it for a team trying to establish where it fits in the league race.

One of the reasons the Cougars have drawn so much attention is the form of running back LJ Martin, whose recent stretch has given BYU a real edge on offense. Add in the betting expectations around the matchup, and this feels like the kind of test that can swing on a few key plays, with TCU needing to prove it can match up when the opponent brings both momentum and a clear identity.
