TCU Makes Strong Impression on 2028 OL Ty McCurry During Top Target Day Visit

TCU’s Top Target Day this past Sunday wasn’t just about the rising 2027 class-it also gave a few standout 2028 prospects a chance to get an early look at the Horned Frogs’ program. One name that stood out? Ty McCurry, a towering offensive tackle out of Southlake Carroll who’s already turning heads despite still being a couple of years out from college ball.

At 6-foot-6 and 270 pounds, McCurry is hard to miss-and college programs certainly haven’t. He’s already picked up offers from Baylor, Arkansas, SMU, North Texas, UTSA, Colorado State, and TCU, among others. That kind of early attention speaks volumes about his upside, and his recent visit to Fort Worth only deepened his connection with the Horned Frogs.

This wasn’t McCurry’s first time on campus-he was in town for a gameday visit back in 2025-but Sunday’s trip gave him a closer look at the coaching staff and the culture Sonny Dykes is building. One of the key figures in McCurry’s recruitment so far has been Chris Owens, TCU’s assistant director of player personnel. Owens, a former blue-chip recruit himself, extended McCurry’s offer during a summer camp and has been in steady contact ever since.

“Coach Owens has done a really good job of staying in touch and letting me know I’m a priority for the class of ’28,” McCurry said. “Same for Coach Luce. The camp was so large this summer I didn’t get to meet the rest of the coaches, so I really loved having the opportunity to meet Coach Dykes and hear his heart for the program and the players.”

That face time with Dykes clearly made an impression, but the visit was meaningful for more than just football. McCurry’s grandfather joined him for the trip, adding a personal touch to the day. There’s already a family connection to TCU-his aunt is an alum-so there’s a sense of tradition in play here as well.

“Today was also really special because I had my grandfather with me,” McCurry said. “My aunt went to TCU, so it’s definitely a family tradition. I’m looking forward to continuing to grow my relationship with the coaches and players.”

McCurry also spent quality time with offensive line coach A.J. Ricker and new offensive coordinator Gordon Sammis.

Both coaches emphasized just how much of a priority McCurry is for the Horned Frogs moving forward. And for a young lineman already thinking about fit and development, those conversations carried weight.

“They both talked to me about how they saw me fitting into the program, which meant a lot,” McCurry said.

Sammis, in particular, has caught McCurry’s attention. With a background in offensive line development and a track record that McCurry has followed since his time at UConn, the new OC brings a skill set that aligns with what McCurry is looking for in a college coach.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing Coach Sammis’ coaching style this fall,” he said. “I’ve been following him since UConn.

That is a huge draw for me. Development and fit is absolutely number one.”

It’s still early in the recruiting process for McCurry, but TCU is clearly laying the groundwork. Between the family ties, the coaching connections, and the emphasis on development, the Horned Frogs are doing all the right things to stay firmly in the mix for one of Texas’ top young linemen.
