TCU is back in Fort Worth on Saturday night looking to move to 2-1, and the matchup brings Arkansas State into Amon G. Carter Stadium for a 7:00 p.m. Central kickoff.
The Horned Frogs are coming off a 63-7 rout of Grambling State, a game in which both sides of the ball put together their sharpest showing of the season. Arkansas State arrives at 1-1 after beating West Georgia 52-7 last week.
This series has leaned TCU’s way before. In the two previous meetings, the Horned Frogs won both times behind huge performances from College Football Hall of Famer LaDainian Tomlinson. He ran for 269 yards in 1999 and followed that with 140 more in 2000 during a 52-3 TCU win.
There’s also a little coaching crossover in this one. Arkansas State offensive coordinator Garrett Altman played at TCU from 2013-17 as an offensive lineman, and former TCU quarterback Kenny Hill, who also coached quarterbacks, is now the Red Wolves’ running backs coach.
TCU’s offense finally found its rhythm after a rough opener against North Carolina in Ireland and a bye week. Against Grambling State, the Frogs piled up 676 total yards and ran for 285 of them.
Jaden Craig turned in a career night, throwing for 391 yards and four touchdowns without an interception while also adding a career-best 53 rushing yards. Four different Frogs found the end zone on the ground, and tight end Kari Ashley posted career highs with seven catches, 119 yards and two touchdowns.
The defense was just as suffocating. TCU held Grambling State to 210 total yards and only 28 in the second half.
On the ground, the Tigers managed just 20 yards on 28 carries, a tiny 0.7 yards per rush. Ansel Din-Mbuh added his third sack of the season, Vernon Glover Jr. picked off a pass and Teon Parks also grabbed an interception, returning it 67 yards for a touchdown.
Through two games, TCU is averaging 36.5 points per game, 478.5 total yards, 195.5 rushing yards and 283 passing yards. Defensively, the Frogs are giving up 266 yards per game overall, with the run defense standing out most.
They’ve allowed only 55 rushing yards per game, which ranks seventh nationally. The pass defense has been more vulnerable, giving up 211 yards per game.
Arkansas State has shown balance of its own. The Red Wolves rushed for 256 yards against West Georgia last week, and in their Week 1 loss to Memphis they threw for 325 yards.
Overall, Arkansas State is averaging 38 points per game, 412 yards of offense, 182 rushing yards and 230 passing yards. Defensively, the Red Wolves are allowing 24.5 points and 384.5 yards per game, and their run defense has been hit hard, surrendering 203.5 rushing yards per game.
Quarterback Trey Owens, a former TCU target, has thrown for 460 yards with three touchdowns and four interceptions. He passed for 130 yards in the win over West Georgia.
Jeremy Payne leads the Arkansas State ground game with 34 carries for 221 yards.
On defense, Max Carroll has 13 tackles and two fumble recoveries, while Ansel Din-Mbuh has 7 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and 3 sacks.
