TCU opened its season in Dublin with a stumble that looked avoidable from the start and costly by the end.
The Horned Frogs got out to a quick 10-point burst on their first two possessions, but North Carolina shut them down after that and walked away with a 15-10 win in Week 0. It was a sharp reversal from last year’s opener between the same teams, when TCU rolled 48-14 in Chapel Hill. This time, in Year 2 under Bill Belichick, the Tar Heels dictated the game once the early punches were thrown.
A big reason TCU never found its footing was Jaden Craig. The new quarterback had a rough first impression on the big stage, and the problems were visible early: shaky accuracy, uneven decisions, and an offense that became easy to read.
Once UNC locked in on running back Jeremy Payne, TCU’s ground game faded too. Craig finished 20/32 for 175 yards and had two fumbles, and the final sequence summed up the afternoon.
Down 15-10 with a 4th and short inside the UNC red zone, Craig rolled left with room to run for the first down, but instead threw across his body into the end zone and the pass fell incomplete.
TCU also beat itself with the kind of mistakes that usually decide close games. The Horned Frogs were flagged 11 times for 90 yards, while North Carolina had just three penalties for 20 yards.
On the final play, TCU jumped on the defensive line on a 4th and short with 30 seconds left, and that flinch sealed it for UNC. Earlier, TCU also gave away 15 yards on a first-down point that had been emphasized by officials this offseason.
The Ireland result also fits an ugly trend. This is the fifth straight season an early game has been played in Dublin, and the loser has not exactly bounced back well.
Last year, Kansas State lost to Iowa State and finished 6-6, with Chris Klieman retiring as head coach. In 2024, Florida State went 2-10 after losing in Ireland to Georgia Tech.
Navy followed a 2023 loss to Notre Dame by finishing 5-7, and Nebraska dropped the 2022 Ireland game to Northwestern before going 4-8 and seeing Scott Frost fired midseason.
TCU still has two games coming up that look very manageable against Grambling State and Arkansas State. But once Big 12 play arrives, the issues have to get cleaned up fast. Quarterback play and the offensive line both need work, and if that doesn’t happen, Fort Worth could be in for a long season.
