Miles Leads TCU's Thrilling Comeback Victory Over Iowa State at Home

Miles orchestrates a dramatic fourth-quarter rally as TCU edges past Iowa State, preserving their impressive home winning streak.

In a thrilling showdown at Schollmaier Arena, the No. 12 TCU women’s basketball team pulled off a remarkable comeback, overcoming a 12-point deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat Iowa State 80-73. This victory marked their 41st consecutive win at home, a streak that was seriously threatened until the final moments.

TCU coach Mark Campbell captured the essence of the game, likening it to a "heavyweight fight" with a "Sweet Sixteen vibe." His pride in the team’s resilience was palpable, as they battled back to keep their impressive home streak alive.

The Horned Frogs (25-4, 13-3) faced a tough challenge from the Cyclones' defense, which initially stifled TCU guards Olivia Miles and Donovyn Hunter. Iowa State (21-7, 9-7) held a commanding 66-53 lead with just over seven minutes remaining.

But TCU wasn't done yet. They clawed back to within six points with 4:22 left on the clock.

Olivia Miles, who had a slow start, exploded in the fourth quarter. She scored six consecutive points and assisted Taylor Bigby on a crucial three-pointer, narrowing Iowa State’s lead to 70-69 with under three minutes to go.

With the game on the line, Miles showcased her brilliance, leading a personal 7-0 run and sinking a pivotal jumper with 54 seconds left. Her fourth-quarter heroics were part of a triple-double performance, finishing with 26 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists.

Miles described her mindset in the final quarter as one driven by sheer determination. Inspired by teammate Marta Suarez, she decided to take charge, turning familiar looks into successful shots.

This win not only extended TCU’s home streak but also inched them closer to a Big 12 title, positioning them a game ahead of West Virginia and Baylor with two games remaining.

The point guard duel between Miles and Iowa State’s Jada Williams was a highlight. Williams, a tenacious defender, initially disrupted Miles’ rhythm, contributing to her 1-for-9 shooting in the first half.

Williams was also instrumental on offense, nearing a triple-double by halftime. However, both guards elevated their play in the fourth quarter, with Miles ultimately outshining her counterpart.

Iowa State’s center, Audi Crooks, presented a massive challenge for TCU. Known for her size and agility, Crooks dominated early, scoring 12 points in the first half. Yet, TCU adjusted in the fourth quarter, with Kennedy Basham stepping up defensively and drawing crucial fouls on Crooks, who fouled out with 1:35 remaining.

Marta Suarez played a crucial role in keeping TCU in the game during the first three quarters. With Miles and Hunter struggling, Suarez’s aggressive play and ability to create shots were vital. Her double-double performance of 19 points and 10 rebounds, along with her defensive efforts, laid the groundwork for TCU’s comeback.

The energy from the crowd, over 5,300 strong, fueled the Horned Frogs. Suarez credited the fans as a "sixth player," their presence and support driving the team’s relentless pursuit of victory.

As TCU prepares to face Cincinnati, this win serves as a testament to their grit and determination, qualities that could propel them to even greater heights this season.
