Florida State’s search for its next head coach could wind up circling back to a very familiar face.
With the Mike Norvell era expected to end in the near future, the Seminoles are now being linked to a reunion with Jimbo Fisher, according to college football insider Bruce Feldman. The possibility comes as Florida State opened the week in the news after firing athletic director Michael Alford.
Fisher’s name carries plenty of history in Tallahassee. He coached the Seminoles for eight seasons from 2010 to 2017, piling up an 83-23 record while winning three ACC championships from 2012 through 2014 and a national championship in 2013.
Reports say Fisher “really wants” the Florida State job if it opens up, and hopes the two sides can make a reunion happen.
There’s also the bigger question hanging over any potential comeback: whether Fisher can fit into the current college football landscape. Since leaving Florida State, he spent six seasons at Texas A&M from 2018 to 2023, going 45-25 before being fired just two weeks before the end of the 2023 season.
His exit from the college game came just before the sport fully shifted into the transfer portal and NIL era, which leaves a real question about how his style would translate in today’s version of roster building.
None of it may matter if Norvell somehow sparks a dramatic run and gets Florida State into the College Football Playoff, but that feels unlikely. For now, the more interesting storyline is when the school decides to move on from Norvell - and whether the Seminoles decide a Fisher reunion is the path they want to take.
