The Cowboys added another running back to the mix Monday, claiming former TCU standout Emari Demercado after the first round of waivers cleared at noon Central time.
Dallas will need to open a spot on its initial 53-man roster later Monday afternoon to make the move official.
Demercado, 27, comes to the Cowboys after not making the Kansas City Chiefs’ roster out of training camp. He entered the league as an undrafted free agent and first made his mark with the Arizona Cardinals, where he spent three seasons and appeared in 40 games. During his rookie year, he played under Cardinals offensive line coach Klayton Adams, who now runs the offense in Dallas.
Over his three NFL seasons, Demercado has piled up 819 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 126 carries, a strong 6.5 yards per attempt. He has also added 50 catches for 324 yards and a score, while logging 185 snaps on special teams.
Head coach Brian Schottenheimer pointed to that familiarity with Adams and Demercado’s versatility when discussing the pickup.
“He’s a guy that Klayton [Adams] had a lot of exposure to,” Schottenhiemer said. “Good veteran, plays special teams. We were excited that we were awarded him in the claiming system.”
Demercado’s path to the NFL started at Saddleback College in California before he spent five seasons at TCU. In Fort Worth, he ran for 1,615 yards and 10 touchdowns and also caught 40 passes for 277 yards and one touchdown. He was part of the Horned Frogs team that reached the national championship game in 2022 and lost to Georgia, 65-7.
Dallas had entered the day with only two true running backs on the 53-man roster, Javonte Williams and Malik Davis, plus fullback Hunter Luepke. The team had already moved on from 2025 draft picks Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah after neither made a strong enough impression in camp or preseason.
“Running backs are one of those positions where there are a lot of able-bodied guys out there,” Schottenheimer said. “I feel really good about Javonte, I feel good about Malik.
He’s a guy I can’t talk enough about. We feel like we have a really good running back room from top to bottom.
It’s one that’s really competitive.”
