In a season marked by dominant performances, the Florida Gators' recent SEC tournament quarterfinal win over the Kentucky Wildcats stands out-not because they were at their best, but precisely because they weren't. Despite a less-than-stellar showing, Florida (26-6, 16-2 in SEC) managed to secure a 71-63 victory, advancing to Saturday’s semifinals. Florida's 12-game winning streak remains unbroken, even with challenges
The Gators faced numerous hurdles in their first SEC tournament game following a double-bye. Shooting a mere 37.9 percent-one of their lowest percentages this season-Florida also tied their season-low with just three successful three-pointers and committed 18 turnovers, just shy of their season-high from a previous nonconference loss to TCU.
It seemed like the perfect setup for a stumble, but Florida's relentless defense, exceptional rebounding, and clutch shooting extended their winning streak to 12 games.
On the flip side, Kentucky (21-13, 10-8 in SEC) struggled even more, shooting only 35.6 percent from the field and a paltry 21.7 percent from three-point range. Florida dominated the boards with a nearly 2-to-1 rebounding advantage, grabbing 50 rebounds to Kentucky's 29. Four Gators players pulled down at least eight rebounds, with Alex Condon and Rueben Chinyelu each snagging 10.
Condon also led the scoring charge, notching 22 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Guard Xaivian Lee continued his stellar play, contributing 11 points, six assists, five rebounds, and three steals. His crucial three-pointer in the final minute pushed Florida's lead to eight, sealing the game at 69-61.
