BYU’s unbeaten start and top-10 ranking have the Cougars squarely in the Big 12 conversation, but the biggest moment from their Week 2 win over Arizona had nothing to do with the final score.
Late in the fourth quarter of BYU’s 28-17 victory, Fox Sports analyst Robert Griffin III turned the broadcast into something nobody saw coming. With play-by-play man Connor Onion alongside him, Griffin pointed out Bear Bachmeier’s mother, April, in the stands and brought up a strange story he said Bachmeier had told him earlier in the week about “naked family dinners.”
RGIII said: “[Bear] he told us that at the dinners, you know, sometimes they just, they just take the clothes off and they walk around naked. You naked at your dinners with the family?
Onion replied: “Do I have to answer that?”
Griffin followed with: “You don’t have to answer that because I don’t think anybody listening right now really kind of does that.”
The exchange immediately stood out as one of the more bizarre moments of the college football weekend, and Griffin has not addressed it since. Bachmeier also has not been asked about the claim, leaving the comment hanging there without any clarification.
On the field, Bachmeier has kept BYU rolling. The sophomore has started for the Cougars since last season, when he helped lead them to a 12-2 record and a Pop-Tarts Bowl win over Georgia Tech. In 2025, he threw for 3,033 yards, 15 touchdowns and seven interceptions while adding 527 rushing yards and 11 scores on the ground.
This season, he’s continued to produce at a high level, with 642 passing yards, six passing touchdowns and one interception, plus two rushing touchdowns. That play has BYU in the hunt for a Big 12 title and a CFP berth in 2026.
Bachmeier is from Murrieta, Calif., and his name has a family story of its own. He explained over the summer that his older brother’s nickname is Tiger, and that nickname helped inspire his own first name.
“Tiger’s real name is James," Bear explained over the summer. "Tiger is the fourth.
James Bachmeir I is my dad’s grandpa and he was a fighter pilot, he smoked those unfiltered Camels. When my dad was growing up, James I would always tell my dad, ‘Get over here Tiger,’ and my dad always thought that was cool so he named James IV Tiger and then he said 'The best one’s gotta be named Bear."

TCU heads into Big 12 play after a needed bounce-back win over Arkansas State, a game that featured encouraging signs from Jaden Craig and Ed Small as the Horned Frogs steadied themselves at 2-1.
