The Yankees’ Wild Card roster is set, and the headline move is the one that changes the shape of the whole series: Giancarlo Stanton is on it.
That alone tells you New York isn’t treating this as a cautious, ceremonial exercise. Stanton has been out since April 24 with severe lingering leg injuries, mostly a pair of calf strains, but the Yankees are giving themselves the option to use him in the best-of-three set against Boston. In 24 games, the designated hitter hit .256/.302/.422 with three home runs and 14 RBIs.
His return creates an immediate lineup puzzle at first base and DH. Stanton is not being carried just to sit, which means he figures to get at-bats at some point. That leaves the Yankees with decisions to make among Paul Goldschmidt, Ben Rice and Luis García Jr. when they sort out the playing-time split.
New York also brought back Trent Grisham after he missed three and a half weeks with a Grade 2 right hamstring strain. His 2026 season has been uneven, with a .211/.308/.395 line and 18 home runs over 121 games.
Even so, the path to regular playing time looks narrow. Spencer Jones has taken over center field, and the other available outfield spot has gone to Heliot Ramos, who has been swinging a hot bat.
The pitching group comes with its own surprises. Ryan Weathers is not on the roster, despite some speculation he might make it back.
He’s been sidelined for a month and change with a left forearm flexor strain. The injury turned out not to be as serious as it first appeared, but it’s still enough to keep him out of the Wild Card round.
The Yankees will carry 10 pitchers, including five starters. The two starters not listed to start a game are right-hander Will Warren and left-hander Carlos Rodón. They could be available in a bulk role, especially with New York only using two back-end bullpen arms in Ryan Yarbrough and John Schreiber.
One expected absence is Aaron Judge. The superstar outfielder is not on the roster after suffering a “moderate” calf strain less than two weeks ago.
The series begins Tuesday night, with Game 1, Game 2 and Game 3 all set for 8 p.m. ET from Tuesday through Thursday.
New York enters the matchup as the No. 4 seed in the American League after finishing 93-68, with its final game of the regular season canceled because of inclement weather. Just like last year, the Yankees will open the postseason at home against the Red Sox in a best-of-three Wild Card round.
The winner moves on to face the AL East winner Tampa Bay Rays, a team both clubs handled well during the regular season.
