The Carolina Panthers didn’t just leave Week 3 with a loss to the Cleveland Browns. They also walked away with a major concern on defense, and it centers on Jaycee Horn.
Carolina fell to 1-2 after the defeat, putting the Panthers in a tie with the 1-2 New Orleans Saints and 1-2 Atlanta Falcons for the division lead after three weeks. But the bigger blow came with Horn, who reportedly suffered a serious quad injury that could sideline him for a long stretch.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the outlook is grim.
"Sources bracing for Panthers corner Jaycee Horn to miss approximately six-to-12 weeks," Fowler reports. "The Pro Bowl corner suffered a torn quad, per @RapSheet.
So, could be a late-season return. Hardly ideal."
That timeline is a gut punch for Carolina. The report stops short of calling it season-ending, which is at least a sliver of relief for the Panthers, but the range itself leaves the defense in a tough spot.
Horn’s injury matters immediately because Carolina’s defense had already been beaten for 21 points by Deshaun Watson and the Browns in the Week 3 loss. Without Horn, the Panthers are facing life without one of the NFL’s better cover corners, and that’s a problem that will show up fast against wide receivers.
The numbers tell the story of how important he’s been. Horn had five interceptions last season and now has 10 in his NFL career. His availability has been uneven at times, too: he played only three games as a rookie and six games in his third season.
That changed over the past two years, when he stayed on the field for 15 games in 2024 and 16 games in 2025. Now, though, this injury points toward another season in which his game total could stay in single digits.
If Horn misses six weeks, he’d be back in Week 10. If the absence stretches to 12 weeks, his return would come near the end of the season, possibly only for the final one or two games as Carolina tries to stay in the playoff race.
However it plays out, this is a major setback for the Panthers. Horn is a superstar cornerback, and losing him for that long would leave an already shaky defense looking a lot more vulnerable. He’s expected to land on injured reserve, with the main question now being whether his recovery lands closer to six weeks or drifts all the way to 12.
